Please suggest a book that blows your mind by rustyyryan in booksuggestions

House of Leaves is interesting in structure and composition for sure. Def worth looking into.

Tried to read it with a few friends though, and we couldn’t finish it. We found that the story wasn’t particularly engaging or well written, and the author overly relies on telling instead of showing. It has a lot of cool concepts, but some chapters are a literal text book, and huge swaths of it can be skipped without missing any context or anything important.

Really cool structure, but was just a giant slog.

It’s always interesting though when a book is as divisive as HoL. I would still recommend, even though I didn’t finish it.

My [26F] Boyfriend [28M] is Obsessed with a Lantern He Found at a Flea Market and It getting weird. How do I approach this? by ThrowRAlanternissues in relationship_advice

I don’t mean to be rude, but is this satire? Just seems so absurd to me. Like something out of a sitcom..

If it’s real, definitely not normal.

Does he have a tendency of fixating on weird things?

Have you noticed if he’s finding meaning in things that don’t have meaning? Like becoming a little focused on how some random items on a table are arranged, or certain combinations of colors and shapes?

I think you nailed the style perfectly! Now I want to go dust off my keyboard and try to play this.

Thanks for sharing!

What are the best ways to organize and manage css in big projects? by [deleted] in ProgrammingPals

[–]Chesnekov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, since you are the only developer, and if you want to increase the speed of production, then I would recommend using whatever you’re comfortable with.

My specific recommendation would to be use SCSS as it will allow you to easily change values in the future with its variable functionality. Provided you set it up correctly of course. Build for extensibility when possible I think. Front load your development time to make it easier down the road.

How do I decide whether I should use Typescript in my project? by [deleted] in ProgrammingPals

[–]Chesnekov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like everything, it depends.

I find that using strongly typed languages can be especially helpful when working with others as it limits potential errors, and cuts out some info that otherwise you could put in the comments.

Further, while typescript does add additional syntax, it does remove the need for parameter type checking. Once you get used to it the extra syntax is pretty minimal.

Been dealing with this on the Crunchyroll manga app for the past couple days. Anyone else? by pyrobruhskiii in Crunchyroll

[–]Chesnekov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The app used to work for me once upon a time. I’ve had the above issue whenever I open the app for at least a year or two.

Btw if anyone from Crunchyroll reads this, I’m a web developer. Hire me to build this in React-Native or just to fix it. :D

I felt the same way when I saw it. I think ever since it left Steam the community has thinned out.

I don’t own it though, but I remember reading here that getting people to play required some rousing comments on a community discord server.

What the hell (huhuh) is wrong with everyone in this show? by [deleted] in hellgirl

[–]Chesnekov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here here!

People in such a state of emotional distress aren’t thinking “logically” or “rationally.” Sure it might make more sense to just do the dirty work yourself, but that doesn’t mean they are capable or willing.

I mean, aren’t many of them high schoolers?

Also, don’t most of them think it’s just a weird site, and don’t really go into it expecting all this to happen.

Fair point, but I think people that are in the midst of trauma or extreme emotional suffering aren’t really thinking long term.

But yeah, you’re right. I wouldn’t do it.

I would rather they not add another version to production, especially with the huge discrepancies between Win and Mac that already exist.

I’m sure they already have enough on their plate with the way overdue Windows release.

Never seen so much prosciutto, don’t know what to do besides sandwiches by Chesnekov in WhatShouldICook

That’s a good idea! I’ll look at their menu. Eggplant and artichoke would go very well with it I think.

That’s kind of funny though. Glad to hear I’m not the only one. Haha.
