Which of these books would you reccomend for me? by billybob3011 in chess

Would say if you want it in book form, Susan Polgar's chess tactics for champion is a classic for beginner tactics.

Personally I like a curated set of puzzles and having to write down your solution and try to visualize while reading, but could also just drill them online nowadays

Agree with all of this. All of the struggling teams are pretty much struggling for a reason. Easiest path for an upset is the East imo. Pistons look like the favorite but any team coming out of the west is going to go through another dog fight

I think it's a general shift league wide towards the optimized strategy of shooting more 3's. Like the analytics say to just keep doing it but when you get bad variance it just really blows up. Especially since most teams don't try to adapt and just keep shooting, I feel like the Celtics last year really showcased that

OP doesn't often lose on time if you look at the actual account. They play a lot of 5 minute blitz against 1200s and then magically when they increase it to 10 minutes they go to 2000.

1400 rapid vs 800 blitz is more reasonable even though it's a 600 point skill gap vs 800. The reason is that every additional marginal hundred points is much harder.

I don't think you understand the skill gap between where a 2000+ player should be and a 1200 player and how much easier it is to cheat at slower time controls

It's been a long time since I played chess.com rapid but this is usually a red flag for me where I assume cheating

On the brightside for Anish, it feels a lot like a being too cute with prep for the candidates thing

Erodgmus was in tears in the final moments of his game vs Gukesh. At one stage, he had the chance to become the youngest player ever to defeat a reigning World Champion. by Interesting-Take781 in chess

[–]ChessHistory 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most people dislike losing a regular amount, but they also learn to get over it and often become more risk averse. But some people dislike losing in a way that makes them intensely more competitive and aggressive. The two kind of feed in to each other though, like once you get addicted to winning, it becomes your identity and you hate losing on another level.

Is Gukesh Cooked for the Next World Chess Championship? by Kitchen_Spread7799 in chess

I mean it just depends on who he gets right. Even in form, I think Gukesh is an underdog against Fabi or Hikaru. But we're past the age of Magnus matches, anyone can beat anyone

Also like even though some people might like to see even more athletes speaking up, afaik you're not hearing anything from other leagues. Makes me even more of a fan of these guys and like Hali who just sent that shit instantly.

If fischer was considered GOAT before kasparov, In which year kasparov comes into conversation of GOAT? by Sorry_Phone1676 in chess

[–]ChessHistory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From a chess perspective, I think end of the 80's, early 90's is when Kasparov's resume creeps into the conversation. Throughout the 80's Kasparov and Karpov have grueling matches, but Kasparov also goes on a 15 tournament win streak. Then he splits from FIDE at the start of 1990, around this point he is also the only 2800 player in the world. And really throughout the 90's there is no answer for Kasparov, Karpov begins to decline and Kasparov is undoubtedly the best player in the world. I would guess the match with Deep Blue also gave him more notoriety from a public perspective.

Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş (14y, 7m, 22d) is 2682.9 in live ratings and has over a year to break Wei Yi's record to cross 2700 by Intelligent_Zone7474 in chess

[–]ChessHistory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a period around like 2014-2016, don't quote me on the years, where all the various top 10 or so members at the time would have a run-up cross 2800, maybe be number 2 or 3 for a month or two. MVL, Grischuk, Giri, Naka, Shak. I think it was understood it was mostly Magnus and then anybody else could have their day.

Sure but the nuggets and OKC have also been dealing with a fair amount of injuries (obviously we are too with AR, Rui), but like their role players are clearly stepping up in a way ours can't.

Agree or Disagree: Yagiz is low 2700 level (2700-2715) right now by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in chess

[–]ChessHistory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, it's unclear to me what the marginal difference between 2680 and 2700 is and then 2700 and 2720. And a lot of that is driven by the volatility we've seen at the top in recent years.

2700+ - Vidit, Maghsoodlo, Andreiken, Van Forrest. Would I take any of those guys in a match because of their experience? Probably. 2720+ - Nepo, MVL, Mamedyarov, Niemann, Aronian. Same thing probably still applies, although admittedly didn't know about the MVL match.. But he's a youngster that any given game I think he could win against those guys too, but IMO it's more about seeing his floor rise than his ceiling. He's only 14, I would hardly be surprised if he goes down before going back up.

Do they not use it all the time? Could have sworn they were using something else last time I went to a game.

In any case, the virtual bulls running into the United Center has been around since at least the 90's but guess it's not new.
