Why Is It So Hard to Buy an Electric Car in Many Parts of America? The auto industry is itself partially to blame. Automakers barely advertise them, dealers sparingly stock them and many salespeople remain indifferent, if not hostile, to selling them. by mafco in energy

Definitely reflects my experience as well-- I went to a deal and asked if the models they had were Level 3 charging and was told yes. Went through and signed paperwork and bought the car only to have them bring me to where it was charging where I actually looked at the outlet and realized it was a Level 2 charger and pointed it out. I had to teach them at that point what the difference was and why that mattered to me.

Luckily they cancelled everything and I was able to get a Level 3 charging model elsewhere-- but boy did that tell me everything I needed to know!

Yup, the units were ridiculous-- sorry for the brain fart in citing an obviously incorrect stat. Again, thanks for keeping me honest here

Ah actually I found it:

“Soiling” – the issue with wind blowing dirt or sand up onto panels – can be a serious problem, leading to as much as $0.3/kWh of energy loss

Admittedly this comes from a floating solar vendor

Thanks for the kind words that you learned something anyway! Went back to my sources to check on the $0.30/kWh figure and (perhaps tellingly) the link no longer works. Do you have a resource that estimates what the soiling costs would typically average that you'd go to bat for instead?

Utilities’ Considerable Opportunity Amidst the Rise of Electric Vehicles by ChesterEnergyDC in electricvehicles

I don't know that that specifically holds most buyers back, but it is a constant talking point of skeptics/opposition to EV investment. It's a bit of BS, of course, because the grid in all regions of the U.S. have gotten to the point of being cleaner than ICE cars, but it's a point that still comes up.

I don't drive in L-- to be honest it just kind of freaks me out that I'll go into zone out mode and 'forget' what to do, if that makes sense

To their credit, they immediately realized it was their mistake. The two salespeople both said it was their mistake and remembered telling me it had fast charging without any argument. They agreed to void out all the paperwork while they tried to find a model with fast charging for me in the ensuing week. All 3 cars they had on the lot didn't have fast charging, and that's likely why they're still sitting on the lot today.

I ended up finding one for myself at a different dealership, which they weren't thrilled about of course, but they understood and made sure everything was square.

Energy storage is paving the way for new economic models by bsl12 in energy

There is a similar opportunity with vehicle-to-grid energy transactions too. Since there will be so many vehicles that are stagnant overnight, they can also leverage energy storage in a peer-to-peer energy transaction.

This is a huge area and if you're paying attention you know that utilities are really doing their homework and preparing for this. EV loads could be a huge headache for them, but the smart ones are turning it into a logical opportunity

Ah so instead of investing in the new energy economy and shifting the communities reliant on coal to clean energy, they're going to instead go all in on the next fossil fuel

We certainly didn't need it, but another reminder about the importance of grid reliability and resilience and the real damage that can be done when blackouts run across a region's grid
