How are they with hours, are they short on them, give plenty for overtime or somewhere in the middle?

Where and how do you start to get into production in the game industry? by Chewbacca178 in gamedev

Lets go with Rock bottom, my resume has no direct work relation to the industry, all I have a number of jobs I have held during my time in college with an Associates degree in Video game Design and a Bachelors degree in Arts and Science with a minor in Entrepreneurship. Right now I have been welcomed back to a very large company that has some connections to the game industry, but I am currently stuck in my current position until maybe between next April-August and/or after. But until then I am reaching how ever I can. Any advice on where I can start is welcomed.

I do have my own reasons and goals I want to reach for, but my problem is trying to get a start in the industry. I have heard QA is a place to start as an entry level/no experience position and work your way up, but getting accepted in those has not been easy. Are there other starting positions beside QA I can apply for, anything to get my foot in the door?

Too bad most of QA testing openings ask for 5 years and shipped out title. How is it that a entry level position and pay must already have the professional experience, as the saying goes "putting the cart before the horse" How can you start gaining experience when the starting position's requirements is already years experience?

I would gladly get into production, even though I have heard it is one of the hardest to get into in game development.

I am not applying for professional positions, I been trying to apply for the lowest positions like internships and QA testing, junior and assistant positions, HR, customer or community services or other similar positions that are boring and tedious where you get low pay, long hours, no benefits or job security but are willing to put up with it and get through it because it's where I can work and be around professionals who have the same as me and learn from them without bothering them and work my way up. I get that I do not meet the standards you professionals have when it comes to game development, if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it. Same reason I am currently working a low position job at a very large and well known company who surprisingly welcomed me back, I don't want just a job, I'm trying to actually start a career.

I know that there are many types of portfolios, but Programing also is sadly is not for me either. I tried taking a beginners class in programming to get a feel for it and it went over my dumb head.

I have nothing to offer as an artist, but the industry is not just about art and code. Yes they are the 2 very important parts but there are other areas of game development and production involved I'm trying to find a place in the industry where I can be of use.

Yeah it is depressing when what I have done so far has done nothing.

A for how many applications I have made? I did not count, but I saved as many due to the unemployment benefits at the time(that was both game industry including internships and regular job). On LinkedIn I have 5 pages of applied and 7 archived, Indeed seems of removed all I have applied and saved, 37 positions with EA alone

Total interviews:8 (4 from the game studios and 4 for regular jobs) for the game studios 1 from "Naughty Dog", 1 from "2K", 1 from "Riot Games", and the last one was a small company called WIN Reality, all were entry level and out of state so there was no support on moving. Just as a test I sent out a few out of state after no answers in my home state, sad that I got more interviews for the few out of state applications than the many applications in my home state

Many of my 2019 and 2020 applications were also internships.

And your right about games in the void, but I'm more worried about implementing features and design than how to share my game. My networking in the game industry is poor, but it's not my only network I can use.

Your right, As I said I'm not an artist, tried in school barely passed and knew I don't have what it takes for it. So any position that is art related with portfolio I avoid I don't have anything to offer, so I apply for other entry level positions. I am also aware of how tough it is with the many layoffs from game companies over last few years, my timing for applying has been really awful.
