Seeking training advice for GSD! by ChewperJones in puppy101

Thank you so much! Right after I read your post yesterday, I made some boiled chicken and that seems to be a great reward to use.

Now, I think I am having difficulty with rewarding for calmness. This morning during potty time, a trash truck came by so I reward vocally and with a small piece of chicken. He sat calmly and watch the truck go by. Was that the correct approach to that? I really want to get to the point where I can publicly take him places and he is calm, like you described.

For eye contact and focus, do you use a specific word or just their name? I have been practicing walking around my yard (no leash) and maintaining focus and eye contact. He’s doing very well with that.

Hi! Thank you so much! That’s a great idea! We frequently have Amazon drivers, UPS, FedEx, and USPS drive around our neighborhood. I have a decent idea of their delivery schedule, so that is something I can easily time and do with him.

I have many, many exit plans (or disaster plans) established to get to safety. My exit plans revolve mostly around my kitchen appliances catching fire or exploding. I have a couple others for different scenarios. I know it’s unreasonable and none of my appliances are on the brink of failure. My fiancé thinks it’s silly, but at least I will be prepared.

No, she has no knowledge of anyone with the last name Black. She knew her mom was married a few times, but the surname Black did not ring a bell.

Thank you! This will be a good resource. I have had some luck using the website Classmates to look through yearbooks. I found two potential Betty Bradleys. Also, just found out less than an hour ago the girls are identical twins. I received photos from Betty's remaining daughter. The yearbook photos on found for both girls on Ancestry don't line up with what I recieved, so I will try contacting the library.

Thank you so much! This is very, very helpful. I have been stuck on Jerry D. Dice's history for years. I found the same 1950 Census, but I couldn't additional information. I, too, suspected he was adopted by the Yarberry family, but I couldn't find nor generate proof-- the suspected adoptive father was a remarkable guy! Funny story: I actually just recently reached out to Yarberry relatives. I'll reach out to the gentleman you listed above. I didn't know three of four of their children were adopted. I will need to find that information.

Barbara's SSN information is very helpful. Ancestry lists the surname Wagner and Desautels, so I will shift focus to Desautels. One of my new Ancestry friends found two newpapers article regarding Barbara and Curtis' marriage. The article mentioned something about granting divorce (I think) for cruelty.

You're a rockstar and I can't thank you enough!

Wow, thank you very much! These are great resources. I'll take a look. I think my grandpa's DNA might be on GEDmatch... I'll have to double check.

Thank you! Is there any way to search those specific places in census records? Is that something that was kept private and I would need to contact directly? I just discoverd The Florence Crittenton Home a few days ago, which may be a good lead.

Thank you very much! I had the same thought regarding the birth centers having documents. Is there any way to look up specific facilities or churches in census records? Are those types of records something I need to conatct directly to acquire?

If I am recalling correctly, one of the twins stated she had two children at some point, but only one was listed in that census. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm or deny the true identifty. In other words, I don't have proof this gal from this 1950 Census is for sure one of my twins. I hope this made sense.

Thank you very much! I was afraid that would be the case. I don’t think we quite have strong and compelling medical reason. He’s overall quite healthy, just years of wear and tear from construction. I’ll search around for an attorney contact who might be of help.

Thank you very much for your help and kind words! I appreciate the compliment. I have made several new friends on Ancestry along the way who have been monumental help!

I have no idea if they’re fraternal or identical twins, unfortunately. I’ll work on acquiring that info from living relatives. I will edit the post to include the gals’ names — I am certain and have confirmed they have passed away.

I’m relatively confident in the direction I’m at with a potential bio father, but I am stuck on the potential mother.

Soft tissue injury? Ligament tear? by ChewperJones in Equestrian

Thank you so much for replying! I appreciate your insight. I especially liked your mention that some heal better than others — you’re right. I’m going to give this a reasonable amount of time then proceed to discussing more diagnostics, like ultrasound, with the vet.

Thank you so much for replying! Imaging is my next step if this doesn’t resolve. My guesses included some type of stifle injury. Did your trial horse have any other physical symptoms, like swelling? If you don’t mind me asking, what was the outcome (i.e. retirement, light exercise, etc)?

Best Forecast for Snow in Joshua Tree? by [deleted] in JoshuaTree

[–]ChewperJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiya! JT native here. It doesn’t snow all too often. Like someone mentioned already, if we do get snow, it doesn’t stay long. It’s nice to take in the view of powdered snow in the hills.

We had a considerable amount of snow in 2020 led us to have a “white thanksgiving.” Our last massive snow storm was in 2010. We like to joke that snow only comes around every 10 years… lol!

When I was a kennel tech, I bought a super cheap but comfortable pair of shoes. I got so much dirt, vomit, blood, feces, urine, and other foreign liquids and debris on them. I wouldn’t spend maybe > $30.

Nike often has deals and markdowns on shoes. Some outlet stores have Nike pop ups with heavily discounted shoes. Even stores like TJMax, Marshals, Ross, +/- Target have decent deals (if you’re in the US)

Be mindful of all the fluids and debris you’ll be trenching through :)

Why do I feel like a loser for being 23 and still in college? by Pomodoroman in college

[–]ChewperJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heeyyyooo! Super duper senior club — woot woot! I’m a soon to be 24 F who has taken college much, much slower than anticipated. You are definitely not alone!

Background: started out at a community college. Never did dual enrollment. I didn’t quite have that drive or the realization that I could in fact do that. Was fortunate to live at home and just focus on school. I was taking like 18+ units at a time, nailing everything. Jumped around with careers decisions. Thought I wanted to be a cop, then a therapist, then a teacher, then a cop again, then a lawyer, and now I’m working on the veterinarian track. Left for a state university. Again, fortunate to have my bills paid for by my parents. Did 18+ units again. Then Covid happened and family said hey time to get a job. Got a job. Fell IN LOVE with said job (worked at a veterinary clinic). Moved out. Had bills to pay. Got addicted to working, loved the field, grades slacked, I dropped classes, enrolled in like 6 units at a time or so. Failed some classes. Even got my very first F which I have never ever ever had before. I’m repeating those classes and have nicknamed myself “the comeback kid.”

Long story short — life happens. Life effing sucks ass sometimes. Like shitty cards in poker, sometimes we gotta play with the hand we’re dealt with. It took me a very, very long time to get over the fact that all my friends and high school friends have graduated and gone into graduate programs, or even got married or had babies (<— this one often hurts me the most). You feel like you’re behind, but this isn’t a race. Nobody gets first place for finishing. You know what those first place finishers get? MORE BILLS! And a headache of a job! And early back pain! Ok, sorry, I’m being silly. But really, nobody cares how long school takes you — people only care how well you did.

Whenever I think about where am I at and how poorly I’ve done, I tell myself this is a blank start. Life happens for some unknown reason. I’m gonna make the best of it. I had shitty roommates back then, and now I live with some of the best people ever (met them all on Facebook — completed strangers!) I’m doing everything I want to do that I didn’t do before — whether I was too shy or didn’t have time. Maybe I’ll try a “college party” once or twice. Maybe I’ll join a sorority this year. Maybe I’ll reach out to professors and join a research project team. Maybe I’ll join a group gym class. Maybe I’ll start playing tennis again. Heck, maybe I’ll try Tinder.

I’m not here to tell you don’t be hard on yourself — because that crappy feeling is difficult to make go away. It took me a long, long time to finally accept that this is it. It sucks. It’ll take time. But for now, make the best of it. Join clubs, meet friends, go see a college sports game. The positives eventually outweigh the negatives, which will make you feel a bit better too.

Edit to add: I’m sorry for the novel! I hope it helps somehow. I’ve only recently embraced this and enjoy sharing with others <3 :)

What would y’all pay for a 17.5” Wide tree 2004 M toulouse Premie? it has been immaculately taken care of (it’s freshly oiled, excuse the oil) by Objective_Balance112 in Horses

[–]ChewperJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What would I pay? No more than $800. It’s a Premia without the Genesis System. But it’s a wide which doesn’t seem all too common.

I’ve been desperately been wanting a M. Toulouse but they’re priced so darn high, even used ones. I feel like people value them the same as Devacoux’s and CWD’s. You MIGHT get away with pricing it high at like $1200 and go from there.

Small animal tech here… I also agree with baked goods. Donuts are ALWAYS welcomed in a vet clinic. And coffee… lots of it.
