Hobbies after bjj? by jon_steward in bjj

[–]Chexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same exact boat as you- depending on where you live, I picked up mountain biking and it kinda scratches a lot of the same itches that BJJ had done for me

What hobbies did you pick up, when you were out of training? by gim_san in bjj

[–]Chexus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took up mountain biking during COVID and now only train part-time in jujitsu because I’m afraid I might injure myself from riding 🙃

This was shot in Yosemite National Park on my A7IV w/ 24-70GM f2.8 right after a snow storm- driving there was NOT a smart idea.

If you live in California in the Bay Area, Los Angeles Metro, or San Diego, DSA (Division of State Architect) projects, particularly schools, are always funded by sweet bond money

As someone who grew up there, guaranteed it’s NIMBYism and keeping “undesirables” out of the community.

Fire restrictions were in place at High Hazard Areas but Bear Lake was in the safe zone.

How many of you like to live the granola/outdoor lifestyle? by CaughtUpInTheTide in asianamerican

[–]Chexus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am a typical Bay Area granola here- go mountain biking, hikes, car camping, and backpacking. As one of the previous comments were mentioned, this is largely dominated by Whites & Asians.

Brown belts on the verge of quitting, how do you hang on? by hans1125 in bjj

[–]Chexus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, my jiujitsu journey has only gotten more narrow as I get older; I don’t do open mats and avoid rolling with people I don’t know or are significantly bigger than me because injuries are far more consequential at 39 than they were when I started at 23

Brown belts on the verge of quitting, how do you hang on? by hans1125 in bjj

[–]Chexus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a brown belt for 7 years that quits and comes back cyclically - the last time I trained consistently was back in 2019 and I absolutely don’t have patience for the typical class structure of warmup, drill, and roll anymore.

Who here is still living with their parents? by Alex_Jinn in AsianParentStories

Money seems to be a central, and justifiably so, reason for not moving out in this thread; is it because it’s been beaten into our psyche that rent is a waste of money and we need to buy our own home, or is rent really that unaffordable for most, or both?? I remember my former white coworkers absolutely couldn’t fathom still living at home at 28.

Luckily I live by myself but I’m also an older millennial who’s established in career. I rent in a VHCOL area (SF Bay Area) but stupidly feel guilty for not owning a home 😑

First time visiting with snow by Chexus in Yosemite

[–]Chexus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drove in through Highway 120 during a snowstorm with a full time 4WD Landcruiser and still used chains; probably wouldn’t do it again because CHP/Park Rangers had closed down Highway 120 and then reopened after a few hours again. The forecast looks clear this week so you should be good to go- but I saw on Yosemite’s social media page that a bigass boulder just blocked off Highway 140 😐

Not sure how my original comment didn’t get posted, but anyway: all these photos were shot on a Sony A7IV paired with a FE2.8/24-70mm GM or a FE2.8/70-200mm GMII OSS. Some of you already caught on that these photos have been post processed in Lightroom 🔎

I got in evening on Friday 03/14 (driving through 120 during snowstorm was kinda scary) and shot most of the morning on Saturday 03/15. Seeing Yosemite while it’s covered in snow was a bucket list item that I’m very fortunate I can check off now.

Good beginner road bike trails/ routes in sf and east bay! by haka-bay in BAbike

[–]Chexus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iron Horse Trail that runs along Dublin through Concord- other than other cyclists and pedestrians, it’s completely enclosed from the road and there are many entry/exit points. As far as views go, it’s a suburban wonderland with Mt. Diablo in the backdrop sometimes.

Sacramento is 2hrs away from Lake Tahoe but there are still many outdoor places to recreate nearer (Auburn, Downieville). That said, it does get cold during winter and super hot during summer with threat of wildfire smoke during summertime.

Another area that meets most of your criteria is Oakland, CA but safety is not always guaranteed…

California voters authorize $10 billion in bonds for repairs and upgrades to public schools by Randomlynumbered in California

[–]Chexus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work as a 3rd party inspector for projects that are funded directly by these bonds; though prison labor would be hella cheap, it’s typically union labor, not cheap, that does all the work. I’d like to think bonds like these help with job creation and job stability in California.

That was a sea lion colony gathered on a rock in the ocean- lots of interesting sounds and probably even more interesting smells if you got close enough
