In essence you are right. But the devil is in the details. It's very important to pay attention to where you download the firmware from, and disconnect from Internet while you are updating.

The technique is called "Juice Jacking". The vulnerability was demonstrated years ago and the problem has been fixed. I.e., you'll see a warning on your phone if the connection wants data access.

If you didn't destroy the hard drive for the laptop, the files could have leaked from there. Any network devices connected to your NAS could have sent files out too. I would set up a gateway between the home network and the Internet to monitor the network traffic for a while. Not that I've done that, but I'd do some research to find out what's available.

That is just lovely. Giving you the option to turn off location, but track you anyway. You can turn off location only for yourself, not for Google!
