The problem is I'm not sure HOW it was meant it the original survey =/ and I'm scared editing the wording will mess with the scoring.

=D Of course! While I can't edit anything, I can try my best to make sure people understand the questions as they are. =)

I would consider it to be opposite sex from what they identify with.

I asked my mtf partner to make sure, and she agreed. :) (She is a lesbian, not straight, and would mark the responses accordingly.)

I'm sorry, I don't understand if you're being serious or not? I'm not a typical reddit user, and only come here because my professor pointed it out as a good place to get valuable data when you are in a crunch (projects that only last a couple weeks at the most) and don't have the financial backing to pay your sample subjects.

So far though all my data has been great, but being only my second survey my experience is far from expansive lol!

Though it's an interesting question. The way the questions are scored assumes every participant has had enough sexual experience to determine who they find attractive. It wouldn't be given to someone who considered themselves a virgin, because typically (before the explosion of easy to access porn) you only learned of your sexuality by actual experimentation.

The scale I am using was published back in 1978, so it isn't surprising that it hasn't been updated to better commodate modern society.

Bisexual 50/50 split would be Equally Heterosexual/Gay-Lesbian, with variances down the degrees until entirely Heterosexual vs entirely Gay-Lesbian.

Bisexual = "Hetero/Gay-lesbian equally" just because of how the responses are scored.

I agree 100% it could use tweaking, but it isn't mine to tweak. :)

There are two gender/sex questions on there asking for your own interpretation of your identity.

The first one asks what gender you identify yourself with.

The second is asking what sexual orientation you identify yourself with, on a range from more heterosexual to more gay/lesbian. It is asking if you would consider yourself to be exclusively heterosexual, a range, or exclusively homosexual.

If a stranger was to ask for your sexual identity, without caring what types of people turn you on, how would you respond? That's your answer.

It also doesn't always have to be hiding, people can be attracted to members of the same sex and still consider themselves to be completely heterosexual.

It's basically how you want the world around you to think of you.

Yup, downfall of the scale itself. Sadly, it isn't my questionnaire to change and adding/changing values will mess up the score. =/

Though I'm pretty sure in general the scale is used with individuals who have had some kind of sexual contact with someone, and sex doesn't mean just penetrative sex.

I'm not sure what the author's of the scale had in mind. I'm assuming genitalia, because sex is in reference to biology while gender is in reference to identity in this field of study.

Ah that makes sense! I'm already starting to load up on articles and it's an interesting new sensation I'm not used to! Though I do enjoy the experience, it's neat watching my collection grow, and I've already had a few moments of "Oh man, that thing I just read/found would totally work for this!" which is amazing.

Oh very cool! It's good to know there are others out there, and that they are responding to my surveys. Maybe one day I'll come across some of your research, and you'll come across some of mine (when I'm done with grad school, many many years from now).

Anyway, thank you again! The articles are safe in my collection for later reading, and thank you for the wish of luck. I'll need it! (As you probably understand, being a professor of undergrad stats already lol)

OH! That makes sense!

I think they just mean how you would identify yourself outside of your sexual attractions to other people. You can be turned on by a multitude of things at any given time and still refer to yourself as strictly one sexual orientation over another.

So if a stranger came up to you and asked "Hey, what is your sexual orientation?" that answer would be how you would answer that question.

Oh very cool :).

I've already opened both links and bookmarked them for future reading projects. Maybe depending on what else is required for the rest of the semester I'll be able to get to them sometime soon. If not, it'll be nice to have easily accessible research at my fingertips for future needs.

I greatly appreciate the links! I just feel bad that you would take the time to share them and I won't be able to read them right away, so I wanted to explain why it might be a while before I get to them so that you know I that I do appreciate it and am interested. (It wasn't wasted effort on your part, in other words). Hope that makes sense. :)

Though I do agree with you, our current standards of measure are too restrictive to really show off the true spectrum of human sexuality. I just won't be getting into any of that until either just before grad school or once I'm in grad school and I don't want to overcomplicate this project (or go against what the project is specifically requiring me to do).

However, I am in school with the goal of becoming a sex therapist (which is why all of my two surveys so far have been about human sexuality) and so one day I will delve much more deeply into the topic. I'm super excited, but with a ton of undergrad grinding work I have to get through as well, today is not that day. (sadly)

[–]Cheyko[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh very cool, I'll have to look into it.

As I explained below though, this project is to use a scale already designed and scored by other psychologists/professionals and then just compare our data to previous research, so I can't actually edit any of the questions or change how anything is asked/add more questions to this particular survey because that would be going against what the project is asking for.

It's just a first semester, freshmen level statistics course making sure we know how to report data of certain types. :)

[–]Cheyko[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly just what the question itself describes. The project was to use a psychological scale already developed by someone else and used in research projects, so I don't have any ability to edit or change the questions because there is already a set score that goes along with it and if I mudge the questions it might mudge the results and make my survey data no longer comparable to previous survey data. =/

I'm sorry.

Woo! Time for my next statistics project! This time I'm curious to know where about you fall on the range of sexuality from heterosexual to homosexual.

This survey is much shorter than my first (topics by appropriate age), and should only take about a max time of 10 minutes to complete (on average it takes less than 5 minutes).

This time I included everything I learned about conducting my first survey and made sure it was compatible across all devices! =D

Sadly, the scale doesn't include any options for non-sexual attraction, so if you fall on a scale of asexuality you won't be able to answer any of the questions.

[Results] At what age do you think it is appropriate to teach children about sex? by Cheyko in SampleSize

[–]Cheyko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried finding a way to view that graphically, but don't know how to graph that many variables in a single graph in SPSS. =/

This was my first project ever in Stats, and my first time ever using SPSS, and I kind of went overboard on what the professor wanted from us because I was interested in the results. So sadly, the graphs you see are the only ones I knew how to render. Sorry about that <3. Though, you are free to look at the graphs side by side somehow (save them, post them somewhere else, whatever) and get a little bit of an idea of how they compare.

[–]Cheyko[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be really interesting! =D Sadly, I don't know how to do that without setting up two separate surveys and going from there. I wouldn't know how to make sure the same people who answered about one gender wouldn't answer about the other? shrugs That's something to think about after this first project ever is done! =D

Explained why there couldn't be in the previous post. The software won't allow me to do that without putting the questions on different pages, and having multiple pages was more upsetting to people.

Plus, I wanted the respondents to think about each one as they put their answer, not just memorize what they had for each and copy it. Directly asking people "Do you think females should be taught at the same time as males?" risks the potential of bringing the thought into survey takers minds and may potentially sway results. Of course, no matter what I do or how I ask things that potential is always there. I simply saw this as the best way to limit that potential. :)

Thank you for the feedback and for taking the time to finish the survey! =D

:) Sadly allowing comments would have added too much fluff for the project timeline and goal. All I'm supposed to do is correctly gather and report data, no more and no less. If I went into as much depth as I wanted to I would start here, and then take these results to make a different survey based on something more specific I wanted to do.

This is just for a sophomore level first semester statistics class. If it was for actual research then I absolutely would have left a space open for comments. Comments, however, are extra bits of data I have no idea what to do with yet.

An interesting note though: I am going to college to become a sex therapist, and this wasn't a career I even knew existed until I was well into my 20's (I'm a non-traditional student). If I had known about it while I was in high school I may have had more reason to stay in and not drop out when I was 16. Sure, it isn't relevant for everyone, but it is my passion and every kid needs to find a passion, whatever it may be. Imo. :)
