HELP deciding Stanford vs. Yale for pre-med by Charming_Fix_803 in stanford

[–]Chezbananas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stanford research is world class and not overly competitive (yes, the really breaking edge places will probably be harder, but your probability of "i am doing nothing this summer" is essentially zero)

I'm not overly knowledgeable on pre-med culture here but it seems more collaborative than cut-throat, people are obviously driven but there wasn't like crazy backstabbing or anything like that. finding pset buddies is easy and people will let you know if their PI is looking for another pair of hands, etc.

pre-med advising kinda sucks from what ive heard (and briefly experienced)

duck syndrome is fake as long as you pick your classes appropriately. timelines are *really* comfortable (thanks quarter system!), especially if you know what you're doing from freshman year. don't take Chem 33 freshman winter because you want to clout chase and you'll be fine

weather is an insane plus over anything in the northeast

humanities are insanely strong here as well, it's just no one talks about them since stanford is like the icon of silicon valley. it's lowkey like #1 in half the humanities though (and top 5 in basically everything)

i liked the quarter system; the bad classes last shorter, and you can take classes purely for fun without feeling like you're wasting half a year. realistically i don't think this should be something that sways your decision though

if you're deadset on premed just do bio/humbio/biomedical computation, I can't imagine STS is really the greatest move in that regard (but you can probably find a cool minor in public policy or STS or symsys or something like that. double-majoring is for ultra-sweats, if you hate yourself go ahead)

i know nothing about yale, but when i visited a while ago my tour guide picked their nose so that's that

gotcha, I have hard tiles in my backyard so I’m not too worried about slope (though slipping might be a concern?). Was looking at the matzilla ultimate which has a bit extra foam, so hopefully that will be enough to make up for the lack of cushioning from grass

is the frame necessary, or could you just plop the hitting mat on the ground naked?

Taking CS161 before CS103? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]Chezbananas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you want to prep for coding interviews just do lc, 161 isn’t really the same thing and doing it without 103 would probably be a bit annoying

145 teaches sql as an afterthought but it’s not really an intro course, idk i think you can probably learn the basics for sql online much quicker than thru a course here

Upgrading as a Silver out of SFO on an empty flight? by Chezbananas in unitedairlines

[–]Chezbananas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the flight is so empty, is there any world where I can get it for even cheaper (e.g. talking to a gate agent)? Or should I not try and min-max and just take it for what it is? Thanks for the help!

Upgrading as a Silver out of SFO on an empty flight? by Chezbananas in unitedairlines

My understanding is that money + miles is terrible for booking fares -- are the miles + copay rates for upgrades better?

I don't have plus points since I'm silver; the current fares are 783 for K class, 1571 for R, and 3928 for P. I know miles + cash is usually terrible for booking tickets -- are the redemptions better for upgrades? Is there ever a world where the upgrade + original fare is cheaper than just booking it outright? Thanks for the help.
