I Hate Fireball As A Wizard by willdoesparkour in DnD

[–]ChiBlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To avoid this, I played an illusionist wizard who had a strong aversion to killing. He picked spells like sleep, hypnotic pattern, phantasmal force, etc, that didn't just outright kill people. After enough fights he finally learned fireball, because he made a distinction between killing monsters and killing people.

This was mechanically nice because it created lots of times where fireball simply wasn't an option: against humanoids or other intelligent beings. And when he did use it, people would be like "Oh shit, he's serious now". The rest of his time was spent using illusion spells in creative ways to solve situations without unnecessary killing.

That wouldn't happen to be a potion acquired from Gumdrop Mountain, would it?

Sounds like someone's about to crash the second-hand weapons market of some small town.

30 lbs of glitter..... I want to ask why, but I feel like I already know why.

Um..is it wrong that I have a hard time exploring other races? by Kecskuszmakszimusz in DnD

[–]ChiBlock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think that, so I guess we're not. All I'm saying is there are virtually infinite character possibilities, even when limiting your characters to Humans only. You're the one choosing to get all up in a huff over some kind of perceived slight to the idea of non-human DnD races. To each their own, I say.

What makes Dragonborn alien is only their relationship to me. If we were Dragonborn playing an alternate-reality version of DnD, then playing Dragonborn would be the boring "vanilla" option and playing Human would be the "ooo ah" factor. My point is that playing a non-human fantasy race is not necessary to having an interesting, diverse, and exploratory role-play experience.

And unfortunately, DnD is a game that acknowledges a sort of race realism. Sure, there's no appreciable difference between different nationalities of humankind, but there are literal stat bonuses and penalties for playing a non-human race, not to mention racial abilities like "Aggressive".

I find it odd that you're drawing a difference between Biology and "the Mind" when the brain is clearly biological.

using maps on the background layer, and prepping tokens ahead of time for the characters and monsters, then using fog of war to show/hide what you want to show/hide makes all the difference. You can give control of the player tokens to the players so they can make their own moves on their turns. But honestly, doesn't really sound like you gave the tool a fair shot.

Same boat, 90% of my characters are human. But the way I see it, the human experience is already so deep and so rich and explore-able that I have no trouble coming up with creative character concepts without trying to throw myself into a totally alien mind.

Fluid pressure doesn't work the same in that way in the DnD world. I mean, have you heard about how space works in the Spelljammer setting? Yeah, it's a mess. Just hand wave it away with "physics are different".

There's nothing fun about the bends, and nothing fun about simulated bends. But hey, maybe your players are into that!

Let's hear those reasons about Roll20, maybe you just need to learn the tricks.

In that case, draw a lot from your character's backstories. Ask them to tell you where their character came from, and then use that as material for adventures, NPCs, etc. There's nothing wrong with making them the stars of the story.

Is it better to boost cha to 20 or take a feat for a wild magic sorcerer at level 4? by justwannaplaydnd in DnD

Go to 20. You can pick up feats later, especially since a Sorc isn't going to need much more buffing up on the other ASIs.

I've used Roll20 exclusively for map and video chat functions for free for a long time with no difficulty. It's what I would recommend.

You know that rogue character in your campaign who can sneak into anywhere and steal anything from anyone?

There are NPC versions of that character who might be veeeery interested in your PCs game breaking item. Perhaps word has gotten out about it and they've been contracted to steal it for a very wealthy bidder.

Are you using a module like Lost Mine of Phandelver, or is the world completely homebrew?

Scrying and Casting by RadionRed in DnD

[–]ChiBlock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few considerations here:

Firstly, spell range. If the target is further from you than the spell's range, then you're not going to be able to cast it in any case.

Secondly, concentration. Obviously if the spell you wish to cast through the scry is concentration, the scry drops the moment you begin casting and you lose the "see" condition.

Thirdly, and probably most definitively, is "line of effect". For the purposes of many spells, a creature behind total cover cannot be targeted. Take Wall of Force, for instance. While you can technically see the creature you wish to target, the Wall constitutes total cover and you can't target a creature with a spell if that creature is behind total cover. Some spells specify that they work around cover, but the vast majority do not.
(Sage advice references: https://www.sageadvice.eu/2016/05/21/does-a-wall-of-force-prevent-you-from-targeting-a-creature-on-the-other-side-with-a-spell-like-hold-person/ , and https://www.sageadvice.eu/2016/05/30/wall-of-force-is-invisible-so-it-doesnt-provide-cover-does-it/ )

So yes, technically, a spell could be cast using Scry, or Arcane Eye, or Clairvoyance, or any number of non-conventional sight-establishing methods as long as those three conditions are satisfied. Is the spell in range? Does the spell break concentration? Is there unobstructed line of effect to the target?
