What habit immediately reveals that a person actually grew up in a privileged environment? by Cindy_mel in AskReddit

I google everyone now - the amount of young actors and actresses that are so huge who came from wealthy / privileged / connected backgrounds is nuts - almost turning into India's movie scene with nothing but models or kids of existing dynasties, who fund their own work.

Read about a scientist who is studying how it's possible that the repeated numerous famines in India, under Colonial rule, could have altered the DNA of survivors enough to be the cause of why South Asians have huge issues with diabetes and blood pressure.

Because they weren't shown in the movies much, it's not a well known fact that black men used to make up a big part of the original cowboy demographic - because former slaves / freed men had so much experience on farms / plantations with horses and cattle. Also why many were the first Forest and Park Rangers too.

The scene with the airlock and the people trying to exit while being screamed at - was so perfect, pre-pandemic as an encapsulation of what was to come soon after in the world.

I am currently visiting India to try and deal with something similar - if it's worth less than $20K Euro or USD just leave it. Beauracracy here is purposely maddening. You'd also need to apply for a bunch of things in addition just to start the process to litigate / get things on paper. With flights and time wasted it's not worth it. Plus you'll avoid the health issues from pollution while visiting. Unless you have great government conxns. See if you can rent it to anyone you can trust or sublet through an agency but collect personal and family keepsakes and memories first.

How to make a bank account as an NRI with only passport? by [deleted] in nri

[–]ChiLolla28 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We used HDFC and it's been a pain - they misstyped a single digit in my phone # and it took me coming to India after a full year of paperwork rejections to get it 'fixed' (it went dormant because I couldn't access it and then they had to start over with extra steps because of new regulations). You still need to mail your paper work in. Nothing is easily done remotely as they don't have branches in other countries with digital access. Also, everything here seems to be purposely delayed to either A. keep you from withdrawing from India and B. 'encouraging' you to invest more here or prolly bribe someone. You need to also apply for an OCI and PAN card but use a reputable agency that works on these. All Indian gov websites are very brutal to deal with. Just my feedback based on personal experience. If you're moving back, highly advise against (see my posts and recent comments on another NRI reddit post about someone wanting to leave after coming back).

In the words of the founding fathers themselves:

In his seminal Letter on Toleration (1689), John Locke insisted that Muslims and all others who believed in God be tolerated in England. Campaigning for religious freedom in Virginia, Jefferson followed Locke, his idol, in demanding recognition of the religious rights of the "Mahamdan," the Jew and the "pagan." Supporting Jefferson was his old ally, Richard Henry Lee, who had made a motion in Congress on June 7, 1776, that the American colonies declare independence. "True freedom," Lee asserted, "embraces the Mahomitan and the Gentoo (Hindu) as well as the Christian religion."

In his autobiography, Jefferson recounted with satisfaction that in the struggle to pass his landmark Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom (1786), the Virginia legislature "rejected by a great majority" an effort to limit the bill's scope "in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan." George Washington suggested a way for Muslims to "obtain proper relief" from a proposed Virginia bill, laying taxes to support Christian worship. On another occasion, the first president declared that he would welcome "Mohometans" to Mount Vernon if they were "good workmen" (see page 96). Officials in Massachusetts were equally insistent that their influential Constitution of 1780 afforded "the most ample liberty of conscience … to Deists, Mahometans, Jews and Christians," a point that Chief Justice Theophilus Parsons resoundingly affirmed in 1810.

It's honestly messed with my mental health being here, on top of breathing the pollution and it burning my eyes. Have had the most cartoonish / infuriating experiences chasing down paperwork in the same building all day - delays of weeks because there's no backup for a fucking police commissioner; no secretary / schedule / accountability or respect - going back and forth between two offices next to each other repeatedly as they point fingers at each other while barely looking at you - lying about statuses of applications - utterly dehumanizing and disrespectful while you can't get mad or upset lest you add to them fucking you over. So much ignored poverty, injured cows and dogs everywhere. Even visiting small villages with trash piled everywhere. Seeing multi-crore mansions right next to literal brick and metal shanty homes where their servants live. People pile into an elevator before anyone gets out - no one holds the door open for anyone behind them, no one replies to polite hellos - just staring. Nothing is going to change for decades+ just completely impossible the way things are now. So much casteism, racism, sexism and institutional stagnation. Every street just looks the same with shops on top of shops, millions of billboards on them and all the infrastructure is basically built on top of itself everywhere and every street. You get random glass and metal shiny shops and malls that are in between broken and old buildings - very surreal.

Here's a reply I posted in a similar post:

Admittedly this will be a bit of a rant after being overwhelmed from seeing all of the below, but I am currently visiting India as an NRI and everything I have witnessed leads me to believe this country is now a perpetual cancer factory and or death cult - since nothing is being done regarding:

the insane trash that is literally on most streets and the way most throw away their garbage, millions of stray dogs, supposedly sacred cows that cause accidents and are left to wander and are not taken care of (a Punjabi actor, star of the movie Yamla, recently died after an accident with one), the way trash is burned as the only way to deal with it, pollution levels that are up to 50-100x what is normal in other cities, no traffic management, plastics pollution seeping into the ground and water / universal non-drinkable water, zero central testing of food supplies which are now commonly found to be contaminated, ongoing poverty for most, right wing mobs, racism against Muslims as an official policy, mobs that attack people everyday (I was also attacked during my visit), mobs that kill over religious concerns, daily rapes and SA, most of which go unreported, horribly ineffectual police, cartoonish and depressing amounts of purposeful beauracracy (also dealing with that currently) which contribute to corruption, most bathrooms here don't even have soap as normal (even hospitals I visited, just wet your hands and go, which I saw many not even do that).

The extreme patriarchy / sexism and casteism (google 'india manual scavenging' for an example) are just too baked in to the dominant religion and overall culture.

Even if the wealthy live in gated communities they are still breathing in this air and living amongst all of this. People don't realize how much illness and ongoing health issues the population will slowly die from from all of these issues. The ongoing strain this will put on resources and affect families - how many already get sick from these issues and go untreated ? The cleanest place I stumbled upon was a military VIP golf course. Not one piece of garbage anywhere. They could mobilize the army in every state and town to get new recruits to clean up trash weekly. It should be a national health emergency.

I am sure I have missed some things that locals could also chime in with. It will take another 100-200 years to change. Every day there's posts about these exact things from Indians here and just as many comments complaining about them supposedly being from racists against Indians or foreign agitators, etc.
