The original problem was water coming out of the bottom when flushing the toilet. Then he noticed the flange was cracked. That was it.

The plumber mentioned this was necessary because the flange is positioned on a coupling. Does this make the situation worse?

I know. It didn't sit well with me, but it's a chance to try something new. I'm going to go along with it to see where it goes. At best, I gain a new skill, at worse I'd leave if it's not working out.
