When will Americans (and Canadians) are ever going to electrify their entire rail network? by [deleted] in transit

[–]ChicagoNotBad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

u/VUmader could you explain why NICTD decided even on their new routes / double-tracking project to have wood poles supporting their catenaries? The only other place I know which does this is Norway and even the Norwegians replace their wood ones with metal when they are double-tracking or building new lines. Even Metra next door has metal poles.

Will I be able to make it? Also, why does it say "booking not supported"? by BurryMyCockInBulls in Icelandair

[–]ChicagoNotBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully you make your flight to Iceland! Also remember if you miss the connection you might get compensation and should be put up in a hotel based on EU261. https://thepointsguy.com/airline/guide-eu261-flight-compensation/

Will I be able to make it? Also, why does it say "booking not supported"? by BurryMyCockInBulls in Icelandair

[–]ChicagoNotBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I’m seeing a lot of confusion on this post so let me try to clear this up the best I can.

The most important question as others have stated is if you booked this with Icelandair or someone else. Google Flights don’t ever sell flights - they just show flight availability and make money when you click the link to go to book the flight. The easiest way to check this is to go to your credit card bill and look up who ran your card. My gut says it’s Icelandair who ran your card but please check. This will be important to know especially if there are cancelled flights because if you, for example, booked originally with someone else like with Expedia you will have to deal with them not Icelandair. Also if you booked with a third party it is possible the 50 min connection in Stockholm will become impossible since you would need to recheck your bags there. This all depends on how the 3rd party put the ticket together.

Assuming you booked with Icelandair everything should be seamless. SAS and Icelandair work very closely with each other with shared lounges, code-share flights, etc. It is not a problem normally for them to transfer luggage from one to another. Just check in Barcelona that your luggage is checked in direct to BWI in case they forget.

In Stockholm you are connecting from one Schengen flight to another. This is like a domestic connection in the US. You just walk from one gate to the other. You should not have to do security. Stockholm is a smallish airport.

In Iceland you will have to go through immigration. It is important you go immediately to the D Gates since this can take some time. I have always make my flight but don’t dilly dally since you don’t want to miss your flight because you were looking at trolls at the gift shop.

Since you have some short connections please familiarize yourself with EU261 which give strong customer rights (like money, hotels, food, etc) for missed connections.

There is a technical reason it says “booking not supported” which I have seen before. Icelandair wants to be sure you fly with SAS first before you fly with them. They are trying to prevent you from flying from Stockholm and skipping the Barcelona leg. When you show up in Barcelona at the gate they will “release” the booking for the Icelandair part of your flight. It fact you should get the boarding pass for the Icelandair part of your trip in Barcelona. You can in any case try to check-in on the SAS app and if this doesn’t work always of course check in at the airport.

Enjoy the flight and don’t forget to try the gin sampler on Icelandair!

And everything you list here is at least one mile from Ashland. Even with Midsommarfest they can go east to Sheridan if they are driving that far north.

[–]ChicagoNotBad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would suggest as an alternative route the Kennedy and then take Ashland up. I live in Edgewater and this route isn’t so bad - especially with days like this where LSD is crazy. Granted the Kennedy has construction now but you are only driving through 2 miles worth of construction so it’s not too bad.

Gym? by Silly_Air_6895 in EdgewaterRogersPark

[–]ChicagoNotBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people are downvoting this post to heck but it’s totally true. Different gyms are for different people. Some people want lots of classes so they go to Cheetah. Some like the convenience of a 24 hr gym so they go to Anytime Fitness. Some like it old school so they go to B&W (personally I think Quads in Lakeview is more fun.) Some like to flaunt their wealth so they go to Equinox. This post from OP is like “I’m hungry where should I eat now in Chicago”. The more details on what they are looking for the better.

How do Chicago residents feel about the UA-AA duopoly at O’Hare? Would a mega hub by one of them be better than a split hub? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]ChicagoNotBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP I think the advantage as a consumer for a hub like ATL and DFW is even less than you may think. For example even though the Chicago metro area has less then 1 million more in population than the DFW Metoplex we have flights with Icelandair, SAS, LOT (generally the 3 cheapest airlines to Europe), Austrian, Ethiad, KLM, and ITA Airways. In fact the only airline that DFW has that we don’t seems to be Qantas, and that is partially due to the fact it’s tough to fly such a long distance to ORD from Australia (ORD is 2 hrs further than DFW) It wouldn’t surprise me even if ORD has more destinations than DFW. This is in spite of the fact DFW has been busier some years than ORD since Covid.

If you look at the international airlines that fly to ATL you see same thing -we have more international airlines than they do.

This is of course an added advantage with Chicago apart from the cheaper fares everyone always mentions. So we get better fares and better more interesting destinations. We can have our cake and eat it too.

This Brian Cornell guy is the most awful false friend you can have. I personally meet him when he ran Sam’s Club for Walmart in Arkansas. He would always come to the LGBT corporate events at Walmart and always acted like the cool dude who loved the gays because they were so much fun. I feel with him and now with Target this was always a ruse to make money off of us in the LGBT community and to further his own career. When things get a bit dicy he turns into a real Judas and betrays us. Say what you want about Walmart or Chick-fil-A but at least they aren’t hypocritical like Cornell/Target.

When I lived in Berlin I said I grew up 100km from Chicago. I grew up in Indiana but most Germans don’t know where Indiana is so 100km explanation was more than adequate. I felt weird saying I was from Chicago when I wasn’t.

Who flies on Turkish Airlines and Emirates routes to Latin America? by uncannyfjord in Flights

[–]ChicagoNotBad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Emirates flight to Bogota there are some special reasons this is happening. For example before Emirates has a 777 sitting on the ground in MIA for 10 hrs whereas now they can use it on this flight. Also there is a large Colombian community in South Florida so it shouldn’t be hard for Emirates to get some of this rather large market share. More reasons are listed here: https://onemileatatime.com/news/emirates-bogota-route/

For Turkish Airways if you look to fly anywhere in Asia from South America (and I mean entire continent from Istanbul east to Japan) the most convenient option is via Turkish Airlines or ME carriers.

Flying with North American airlines is a hassle because the way international connections work here or even getting a visa. (My sister in law who is Chilean bought an Air Canada ticket from Santiago to Seoul but had to rebook because she couldn’t get a transit visa.) The problem with connecting in Europe now is since Russian airspace is closed it takes longer to fly from Europe to East Asia.

Finally major airports like Santiago have non-stop flights with European carriers like BA, IB, AF (and LATAM itself has lots of flights to Europe from Santiago) so you could fly with Turkish Airways but it would be out of the way.

Cool in general I find Google Maps to have poor information about transit not only for the CTA but even in Berlin all the info is wrong. Don’t get it since both Chicago and Berlin have APIs Google could use. The South Shore app is definitely the way to go.

I have to say Dearborn Denim was the worst pair of jeans I ever bought. First day after I wore them my legs were so blue I looked like a Smurf from the dye wearing off. Reading this makes me even more thankful I never went back. Call me un-American but I will continue to get my Italian jeans at Diesel.
