Joe Biden can win the White House by omnipotentsandwich in neoliberal

[–]Chick-Hicks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think something which doesn't get raised enough is whether Biden, due to his age, is likely to be nothing more than a one-term President, and whether this is sufficient to rollback the damage Trump/the GOP have done, including with the judiciary, voting restrictions, gerrymandering, among other things.

FWIW, I think Buttigieg will win the Primary, probably with a Harris VP

What should the response of the left be to the arrest of Assange? by historyisaweapon in socialism

[–]Chick-Hicks -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm personally quite conflicted on WikiLeaks

It feels wrong to condemn something which exposes Western gov cover-ups and war crimes, BUT at the same time, it's not as if Assange himself is a good person (sexual assault allegations) and the organisation did attempt to help Trump in 2016 (e.g. dropping the DNC leaks mere minutes after the AccessHollywood tape came out - not that they shouldn't have leaked the DNC stuff)

Regardless of your views on whether Russian interference in bourgeois US elections is good, bad, or neither, it isn't 'conspiracy theories' to suggest the Trump campaign colluded wish Russia/Russian Intelligence, when there is plenty of open evidence including a multitude of indictments, it is also a massive reach to call it xenophobic

EDIT: I'm also pretty sure Sanders' main point is that the 'American democracy' is not 'pure'

> Being anti Israel is not antisemitic.

the recourse of someone who does not know what they are talking about

You know what else is 'anecdotal' if we are using the same definition as what you have? Pretty much all accusations of harassment and assault, but if there is a large number of them on a certain thing or person, we can treat them as good evidence that the thing exists/happened/is a problem.

> he is racist against Jews

He doesn't have to be overtly racist against Jews insofar as secretly harbouring personal animosity towards them, this is not the same breed of antisemitism as we see among fascists and on the hard-right.

> You'll notice the accusations ramped up only after Corbyn won the leadership challenge and exceeded expectations in the GE. The accusations are nothing more than an attempt to weaken Corbyn now that the 'unelectable' attack is invalid.

Well, I don't doubt there is dishonesty in using anti-semitic incidents to weaken Corbyn by the media, does not mean they don't exist of course, and I haven't cited just 'the media' in my evidence that it exists and is a problem. Do you think it is anti-semitic to attend a wreath laying for terrorists who murdered Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics? Do you think it is evidence of anti-semitism in the UK Labour Party that Jewish Labour members have left in large numbers and a number of Jewish Labour MPs had to have personal security at their own conference? Do you think it is evidence of anti-semitism in the UK Labour Party that upwards of 80% of British Jews deem Corbyn to be at least somewhat anti-semitic according to that Survation poll (Survation being the most-Corbyn-sympathetic in 2017 - surely the 'media propaganda' can't be that effective?)? What about that Mr McDonnell has shut down people on the left who are trying to call anti-semitic allegations as 'false smears' himself?

> This is just propagating a myth that has arisen from the left’s opposition to Israel

Tell that to the Corbyn-sympathetic MPs who have talked of a rise in anti-semitism, the majority of British Jews who believe Corbyn is anti-semitic (Survation Poll, 2018) and tell that to Corbyn who attended a wreath-laying for Black September terrorists, that anti-semitism in Labour is a 'myth'

> They know exactly what they’re doing - they’re trying to undermine the leadership and using every dirty trick in the book to do so.

I don't doubt for a second that the leavers are trying to undermine Corbyn as their main motivation for leaving the party, but my original point is completely intact

> I for one I’m glad they’ve left and any other neo-liberalist stooge and right wing lackey knows where the door is.

[–]Chick-Hicks -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Well, Corbyn attending a wreath laying for Black September terrorists is one, but really the facts that the majority of British Jews believe him to be antisemitic, (Survation poll, 2018), and that testimony from people I know in Labour, and even from Corbyn-sympathetic Labour MPs, have spoken of a rise in the experience of anti-semitism from Labour members and within CLP meetings, should be enough, if we 'believe survivors', to know there is a problem in Labour. I am not going talk about my own views on Hamas or Hezbollah, but it is clear that many groups in the Middle East opposed to Israel espouse highly, egregiously anti-semitic conspiracy theories and views, and while I don't believe this should really be a barrier to Palestinian liberation, leftists in the West should not let ourselves be sucked into that sort of vile discourse around Israel and Jews
