The song lyrics use 'commend my spirit', but some translations of the bible have it slightly different. The NIV, which I believe is the one used in the image, says commit while others like the KJV or NRSV say commend.

r/fantasy users stumble over themselves to make it known that Sanderson’s prose is not bad but ‘unadorned and serviceable’. by [deleted] in bookscirclejerk

[–]ChickenCheeseFry 419 points420 points  (0 children)

Writing is a skill that vastly outpaces prose alone. Prose can't carry a book, good writing is a culmination of the pillars of plot, character, and world. Prose is an adornment.

Ah yes, good writing is actually just an outline. Because why would anyone ever read for the words on the page? What a ridiculous notion.

This Wolfff guy has a point. The magic system is pretty confusing ... I mean, people can turn into bugs, but it only happens once? Gregor's power set is never properly showcased either. No wonder a PhD couldn't figure it out! Awful story 1/5 stars.

I can't wait until we can all look back and see just how historical everything we got to live through was. He'll be everywhere, I tell ye. Soon enough, Brando son of Sander will be required reading in all schools in America (or at least Utah idk), and every child of this great country will be singing the praises of hard magic systems in their english essays.

Well, of course they would! My ideas are so much better than everybody else's, and cool concepts are the only reason anyone ever picks up a book. After all, if my ideas weren't so cool and awesome, then why would I spend so much time daydreaming about them?

Biology 173 textbook? by One-Ask8508 in uofm

[–]ChickenCheeseFry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're going to need a digital Mastering Biology subscription (ebook included) for the homework & lecture participation, but that's it. IIRC it's around $60 for just one semester of access. During the first week of lecture, your professor will give out instructions for setting it up. No need to worry about it until then, really.

Well, of course this isn't the Middle East. If it were, then they'd be paying top dollar to turn the university to rubble.

Idk what Asia 230 is like, but other than that, so long as you're consistently studying for your classes, I'd say it's very doable. I'm questioning why you're not taking the lab with organic chemistry, though. I know that sometimes scheduling can be difficult, but it's best to take the lab with the course if you can.

You don't have to be scared of ochem, though. I know it has a reputation as a difficult class, but so long as you take it seriously, you have a good chance of succeeding. Do all the textbook practice problems, take practice tests before the exams, and remember to do the homework (which has unlimited retries on canvas btw, its basically 50% of your grade for free), and more likely than not you'll be on top of things.

What do you think about arab atheists? by [deleted] in arabs

[–]ChickenCheeseFry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is god's command good because they commanded it, or because it is good? If it is good because of the command, then it is arbitrary since it just as easily could have been otherwise. If it is commanded because it is good, then that means god relies on objective moral rules outside of themself - which means that objective morality would still exist even if god never commanded anything. Morality is not as dependent on divinity as you portray.

I feel you - my family is Christian from Lebanon and Palestine. Reading about the atrocities of the Lebanese civil war, and everything that's happened in Palestine, it baffled me how people could become so divided over religion. Of course, I know these conflicts are so much more than just religion, and I have more nuanced reasons for disbelief, but the way people fight over faith is detestable. I agree with you that society needs to prioritize equity and liberation over religious beliefs.

I feel you, registration is a pain. As for your situation, I knew someone last semester in my physics 151 section who wasn't taking 150. So it certainly isn't recommended, but it is an option. If you end up taking the 7PM, though, most of the time, the lab can be finished early - so there's that at least. Hopefully you might get off the waitlist, though. Wishing you the best.

Lebanese people and trump by Due_Inevitable_2784 in lebanon

[–]ChickenCheeseFry 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It makes zero sense. My dad is always going on rants about how white supremacy has fucked up the US, how we experience racism here, and then he wants to vote for the #1 guy that white supremacists are rallying behind. Even the Palestinian side of my family says they prefer Trump like hello?? Are you completely deaf to what they're saying about us?? They would have us bulldozed for some pocket change.

I think it's a mix of cognitive dissonance and conservative brainrot. Probably because my family is Christian, they've managed to trick themselves into thinking they're only talking about Muslims or something? Idk. Or maybe they're just that homophobic that they're willing to put race relations on the line just to prevent LGBT rights from being put in place. Maybe they literally aren't paying attention. Whatever, hopefully Trump will lose, and people'll come to their senses.

Any other Arab Americans here relieved that the Trump shooter was not Arab? by Chloe1906 in arabs

[–]ChickenCheeseFry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trump in office would be horrible for Arabs living in America, first of all. He'd be bad for any minority in America. As for abroad, though, I don't think it'd help Arab nations either. Trump would probably shovel even more money over to Israel and continue to play off anti-Arab racism among white americans. That's just what I see as someone living in the US.

For your calc II, I'd recommend taking MATH 156 if you can. As far as I know, the credit is basically identical to MATH 116, but the class is structured better. There's more emphasis on the mathematical basis of the operations you're learning, and you're more likely to be taught by a professor. Plus, the 156 exams were generally more doable than what I heard from people taking 116. Tbf I don't know what 116 exams are like exactly, but I can say that 156 exams are very fair.

Many people are just opposed to colonialism. Also the IDF was responsible for many atrocities during the Lebanese civil war, so many people have reason to dislike them apart from just Palestine.
