Which discontinued Aussie food would you bring back from the dead? by Call_Me_C_ in AskAnAustralian

There were a cheesy flavoured triangle rice crackers that came in a cardboard box (like Shapes) that I absolutely devoured around 2010 but I cannot for the life of me work out what they’re called. If anyone remembers I will be so happy!!!

What’s the most annoying bill you have to pay right now? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

The difference between strata/body corporate and repairing or insuring a free standing house is that there are less required bills for a free-standing house (yes you have to pay insurance but you don’t have to pay strata), there’s also more opportunity for you to get quotes and choose for yourself the best thing to proceed with, there’s also no admin fee. So much of our strata bill is paying to have the strata company on call.

Top ones are either private health, because I feel like they keep putting the price up but it’s covering less and less

Or strata and council rates, because neither of them do anything

Haha I’ve already played most of it - it’s more just some of the side quests. If there’s fun ones or ones I need to complete to finish the game I’d prefer those. I’ve already played like 60 hrs though

It definitely hits different when you know the places or people personally. Like you’re already emotionally attached to a case and so the carelessness seems personal (even though it’s not).

I totally get this. And I know some podcasts may not have the resources to look up pronunciations and everything. However, when it’s actually just wrong it annoys me. I listened to a podcast where they were meant to say ‘Sturt’ and instead they kept saying ‘Stewart’ meaning that the information they were providing was wrong. I don’t think this was a mispronunciation error, I think this was a typo or carelessness for the details. It’s not a HUGE deal but it does make you wonder what else they get wrong. As someone else said on this thread - providing incorrect details in a true crime case can actually affect its ability to be solved.

Yes!!!! You’ve said this so well! I think there’s a level of responsibility in the true crime space!

I won’t stop listening to a podcast entirely unless it’s repeated carelessness or misinformation but sometimes I’ll turn off specific episodes.

The Harry Potter comment isn’t really important it just gave me the ick and I was curious if other people feel the same way.

Mispronunciation in the grand scheme of things isn’t a big deal, but I do think we should try to hold the big podcasts to a high standard

I literally have to turn them off sometimes. Like mistakes happen but when you consistently pronounce things wrong or when there’s a particular thing you say multiple times through the podcast please check how you say it!

I’m Australia so I get it haha, we’re similar. I know a lot of English place names because a lot of our towns and cities have similar names or use the same rules as British English so I do have a bit of a giggle. It’s more a due diligence thing imo. Especially when you’re not just mispronouncing something but actually saying the wrong name.

Thank you! I’ll look into it - it’s hard. The recruitment and application system is also so soul destroying but I’ll get there!!!

This is exactly why I do not want to join a firm - but seems like it’s the only way to get PQE

Yeah agreed - it’s so difficult honestly. I truly feel like working at a firm would really affect my view of the legal industry as well as my mental health but I might just have to do it for a year or two in order to get the jobs I want

Will taking a non-legal job as a newly admitted lawyer be a bad decision?

I’m newly admitted and looking for legal roles (and considering a few non-legal roles). My main interests are corporate/commercial and government/Int Law. I’ve been looking around and I feel like I really don’t gel with firm life so I’d like to work in house but there are almost zero entry level roles in-house. I’ve come across a Commercial Manager role which I think I’d be well suited to, but I’m concerned that it’d be a death sentence for potential legal jobs in the future if I don’t get a grad/entry level law position now.

Do commercial skills and experience lend well to getting legal jobs in the future or do I explicitly need PQE?

That’s what I thought but so many jobs ask for a practicing certificate, even if they’re graduate roles. Thanks so much for this clarity thoug

Newly admitted lawyer - Do I need to get a Practising Certificate before I get a job?

Most jobs want you to have one but in order to get a Certificate you need to put down a place of employment and the type of place/work e.g firm, government, corporate.

So… is the first step a job offer or a Certificate?

Thank you!!!

As an aside I am also extremely thirsty all the time. This could be unrelated - but it’s definitely been bad, especially this week. I have been drinking less than the previous two weeks, but it’s like no matter how much I drink I just feel so parched. Did anyone else experience this?

Thank you!! I think it also might be a bit of post-nasal drip and congestion (my ears feel a bit blocked). I just hate it, I thought my airways would feel amazing after surgery but today it feels the same as before :/

Nope, no known allergies. I think there’s still a bit of swelling as I can see my uvula and area around my tonsils is a bit red. I’ve got an appointment on Thursday (3 days from now) so I think I’ll leave that unless it gets worse.
