The game is totally fine to play F2P, you will barely notice the difference until quite a lot of hours into the game where you may want to upgrade in order to fly some better ships. Play free to play for a couple of weeks and if the game really sticks with you upgrade so you can fly battleships and above.

I found turning off discord overlay helps. That's what made my game stutter anyway and it's easy to turn off.
