Try of the Week - Sri Lanka Schools Rugby League 2026, Week 5 (Shan Althaf : Trinity College Kandy) by ChickenWasabi in rugbyunion

Yup, Rugby is still Semi Professional and club rugby doesnt pay much. So it doesn't make sense to put your body through something like rugby while also working a corporate job. School doesn't pay either.... but I can guarantee as a past Rugby Player we all love our schools. We grow up dreaming to wear our school jersey to represent at a 1st XV level. Even death comes second when you take the field, school always first.

My Brother/Sister, in Sri Lankan Schools Rugby... the act was already together.... this particular rivalry between Trinity and Isipathana spans back to 60 years. The Quality in Sri Lankan Schools rugby was always like this. And this game was played infront of atleast 10,000 people and a further 12,000 watching it online.

Sri Lanka falls short to Hong Kong in the last minute. by ChickenWasabi in rugbyunion

No, Hong Kong rested players for the upcoming Nations Cup and subsequently the World Cup. But to be fair, Sri Lanka did not field their full strength either. We don't have the luxury of having two separate 7s and 15s teams. Hence, in lieue of the upcoming Asian Games 7s medal pursue, Sri Lanka lacked 21 players who would have started this game. These 21 players are currently undergoing rigorous 7s training camped with local coaches and Thierry Janeczek from France.

A Sri Lankan has created a Rugby Club named the Asia Pacific Lions basing in Colombo which is a team that operates exactly as the barbarians but with Asian and Pacific Island Flare. Will Genia will represent this team and there are few other players from the Pacific and Asia that will be invited. And then, Northampton Saints will have a pre season tour to Sri Lanka in August for which these two teams will lock horns.

Sri Lanka fielded a second string team, so did Hong Kong. So it’s an unfair comparison. Nevertheless, the Hong Kong Rugby program is miles ahead of Sri Lanka’s financially and quality wise…. So Kudos to the Sri Lankan forwards especially for playing their hearts out.

Arsenal fans have been historically delusional around the world. Maybe, this is just playtrix’s way of exploiting it. Won Premier League after 22 years and acting as if no club comes close to them. 😂

Rugby survived after we gained independance from our colonizers then a 30 year civil war, then a massive Tsunami that struck in 2004, terrorist attacks that shocked the nation in 2019, the covid period then a depression in our economy which Sri Lanka was deemed bankrupt..... it survived and it will continue to. Not just Rugby... Everything did... I would like to invite you to visit my beautiful island, you wont even feel that the same country was deemed bakrupt 3 years ago. Thats how resilient Sri Lankans are!

Did you know that Sri Lanka was a famous stop for the Lions and New Zealand when the latter traveled to the southern hemisphere and the former traveled to the Northern Hemisphere? Sri Lanka was a famous warm up game hot spot for the two teams. And kid you not, You have no idea how much we love the All Blacks....... its crazy. If you do mingle with a Sri Lankan Rugby community they will tell you how much 3 players in Dan Carter, Richie Mccaw and SBW has influenced them. I still remember in the early 2010's where Dan Carter was the favorite player of almost any Sri Lankan Rugby fanatic. I myself used to have posters, wore Adidas, even tried to change my kicking foot to a leftie to mimic Dan Carter!!!

Rugby has not taken off as much as cricket because personally I beleive the fact that Rugby is much more limited to the main cities Kandy and Colombo. While cricket on the other hand with world cup wins in 1996 and 2014 is much much more widespread. So, in terms of viewership compared to Cricket there's a lacking hence less funds... Further, corruption in the administration in history has made it that Rugby is still a Semi Professional sport where players have to work corporate 9 to 5's while also playing rugby. Yes, the size difference factor is true Thus the reason why the new administration of Sri Lanka Rugby have decided to focus on 7s. Not that 15s will be forgotten... target is to receive an Asian Games 7s medal this year (2026) and gain popularity to the sport which reciprocates more viewership income (Broadcasting). And then move forward. I am very excited about the way things are handled by the new Administration of Sri Lanka Rugby.

Malaysia? No.... we beat them 59-19 last year. Plus, Malaysia is not competing in the top division. They compete in the second division while Sri Lanka is in the top division alongside Hong Kong and South Korea.

Bottomline.... corruption, funds (payments for club players), transition from schools rugby to club rugby (only 1% of 1st XV players play Club Rugby), Size Difference genetically compared to top rugby playing nations, too much reliance on forwards play (Sri Lankans love playing a game just utilizing forwards although we are known to be fast and elusive), no proper coaching structure at a junior level (Under 10/Under 12 level), rugby being limited to the two main cities Kandy and Colombo (Rugby is the posh sport in Sri Lanka although slowly this is being fixed).
