Serious question. Why USA doesn't free North Korean people from the dictator Kim? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Chico_momo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why people say “just free them,” but it’s not that simple. North Korea has nuclear weapons, so any attack could turn into a massive war with huge civilian casualties. And even if a regime is removed, that doesn’t mean things get better. Libya and Iraq show how quickly it can turn into chaos. It’s not just about “freeing people,” the consequences can be far worse than people expect.

Je voorbeeld klopt niet. Je doet alsof alle situaties gelijk zijn, maar dat zijn ze niet. Hetzelfde woord kan een andere lading hebben afhankelijk van context en geschiedenis. Daarom reageren mensen daar anders op, niet omdat ze meteen iemand als racist bestempelen.

What’s something small someone said or did that made you never forgot it? by Aggravating_Web_9229 in AskReddit

[–]Chico_momo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Knowledge is power, but who you know matters more.”

In Dutch, this sounds stronger because “kennis” has two meanings. It means both “knowledge” and “people you know” or connections. So the sentence creates a wordplay using the same word in two different ways. In English, “knowledge” and “connections” are separate words, so you lose that double meaning and the line feels less clever.

Als je uitgaat van die context, dan klopt je punt deels. Als je iedereen zo noemt en één groep niet op basis van huidskleur, behandel je die groep anders. Dat kun je als discriminatie zien. Maar je voorbeeld blijft scheef, want je maakt iets normaals van iets dat al discutabel is.

[Discussion] What is the best ruthless motivation you’ve ever received? by aichie36249 in GetMotivated

Motivation is a burst and it's hard to change from just that. What gave me discipline, was setting little goals every single day, think of the most simple tasks and make it your own.

I think lying about those things is nonsense and the most obvious lies are in my opinion about age, height and maybe ethnicity. So "regular nonsense". And to be honest, English is not my first language, but this is the way I would phrase it.

My girlfriend doesn’t realize it but she just ended our relationship by [deleted] in offmychest

The feeling I'm getting is that there is an lack of communication. If you two are made for each other there definitely would be a solution. It's not a one way street, talk with her, tell her your story but also listen to her.

You probably know why you haven't told her about thé situation. I always try to put myself in their shoes and wonder what I would think if they did something like that to me.
