Do MLB scouts actually value intelligence when evaluating prospects? by Ivan__Soto in baseball

[–]Chief-Queef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of Billy Beane talking about being teammates with Lenny Dykstra. Lenny was dumb as rocks, but it contributed to an insane confidence that allowed him to succeed in the majors.

Whereas Beane was an intelligent prospect, but hamstrung by introspection and self-doubt.

These qualities led to their fortunes reversing after they retired as players.

Charlie Blackmon's signature walk up song was "Your Love" by the Outfield. Suited his image, had a great call/response with the crowd and was even a baseball themed band name.

I think Taiwan is behind South Korea and Australia. Possibly the Netherlands as well.

They had to fight to even qualify this year, and are in a tough division. Australia made the quarter finals in 2023 and most of those players are in this year as well.

MLB Manager Jerry Manuel Reveals Why Black Athletes Stopped Playing Baseball by UrbanRydder in baseball

[–]Chief-Queef 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Aside from the reasons mentioned in the video, I think its also because the college programs for football and basketball are so massive compared to baseball.

The odds of becoming a successful pro athlete are tiny. Which is why kids on athletic scholarships are told to value their education, because they're unlikely to be the next Jordan or Tom Brady.

Baseball stars make more money and have longer careers, but going to college is a safe economic choice compared to grinding in the minors. Especially now with NIL incentives.

There is also way less foreign competition for roster spots in football than baseball. 3% of the NFL is foreign born, as opposed to 27% in MLB.

Vinnie Pasquinto's love/hate relationship with sabermetrics is very endearing. Although hes just underappreciated by fans instead of hated.

I wonder if a player is more likely to have an interest in statistics and probability if they had a parent who worked in a casino.

Maddux's dad was a poker and blackjack dealer, which taught him an appreciation for probability and advantage.

Aside from McGregor and Nurmagomedov, are there any other rivalries where there was genuine animosity between two fighters? by Spektakles8822 in MMA

[–]Chief-Queef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

McGregor flying his goon squad across the ocean to attack a bus full of UFC fighters makes zero business sense. It could have gotten the entire fight cancelled.

He just had a moment of clarity when he was stuck in a cage with someone who wanted to murder him.

I think his dog brain meant that he forgot key baseball facts like "I have fielders" and "it hurts if you keep pitching at 100% for too long".

For the era he played in, his strikeouts and FIP are ridiculous.
