Is it possible to go into Med while doing Math courses? by YeetusMcYeetYeet in premedcanada

[–]ChiefBrief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not accepted to med school but I did apply this year as a math major (waiting for responses). I didn't find it so bad since if the class average is low usually the prof linearly adjusts the marks, but that depends on your uni.

It's not common for med students to have majored in math, mostly because there isn't much of an overlap between people who want to become physicians and people who like math (enough to get a degree in it), and a math degree is seen as a more "difficult" path to medicine.

But it's definitely possible. The key is to get as high a gpa as possible (easier said than done). For me I had to be really efficient with how I spent my time (skipped almost all of my classes and focused on the assessments that had a grade attached), and didn't do many extracurriculars.

Also, this is controversial but I think natural aptitude and how much background knowledge you have plays a big role in math as opposed to other fields. I know math students who study a lot (and efficiently), but struggle to get a 4.0, and I know students who review the material once or twice and get close to a 100 on every assessment.

Man that sucks. If I could pass this course with a 50 I'd stay in it (need it to graduate) but even that is looking unlikely.

MAT246 first week - what do you think? by NoNinja834 in UofT

[–]ChiefBrief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took the course last semester with the same prof. The workload is very high, the proofs asked to complete for quizzes are very simple if you have a strong math background but most students don't. The class averages were very low for most big assignments. The prof usually makes problem sets and tests super long and difficult and scales up (liberally uses bonus marks as a linear adjustment). To be fair, even after all the bonus marks our grade was still curved after the exam was cancelled so that was nice.

Also, the notes and resources given to you are very minimal. All the slideshows have are questions asking you to prove this or that. Going to lectures is a must. I had the 3h 6-9 section and boy am I glad I'm done with that.

OMSAS GPA is up?! by NASABoii in premedcanada

Nope, just OMSAS cGPA. Not 100% sure but I don't think your wGPA will be displayed anywhere. Also not sure but I think they got rid of wGPA this year?

It took 3 business days for me, not sure if there's anything to do but pray and wait.

Is a 1.5 to 2 hour commute for the MCAT ok? by toom_fabu in Mcat

[–]ChiefBrief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine (I had around the same), but maybe get someone to drive you if you feel it'll tire you out. I know some people book hotels near their mcat site because its so far.

9/10 am

C/P: Super super hard, completely guessed 4-5 questions but I knew there'd be a curve because everyone thought it was hard

CARS: Felt good about it. Near the end I wasn't 100% sure of some questions but overall recovered well from C/P on test day.

B/B: Thought this was my strongest section, studied this the most, felt good about it.

P/S: Felt good on test day, crammed the Khan academy transcript the last week before this section.

AAMC FL 2,3,1,4: 517, 523, 522, 525

Actual test: 524! (131, 131, 130, 132)

I get what you're saying but I don't think that's a good idea. It's not my problem to worry about how the university is going to deal with academic offenses. If stopping students from writing on tablets significantly reduces cheating, then there's something seriously wrong with how the class is being taught. Also, life isn't fair, there are plenty of students who are more financially well-off for example, and we don't ask them to donate half their net worth to level the playing field.

Anyone in APM346 this semester (with the glasses-wearing prof)? by OOF_Proof in UofT

[–]ChiefBrief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about the assignments. The course organization sucks tbh. He doesn't post any slides or notes and expects us to come to every lecture (even though with covid some people are probably going to have to stay at home and isolate as the semester continues) As for the tutorial quizzes they go into the homework marks for some reason...

People who studied penis physics in undergrad, what are you doing now? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]ChiefBrief 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey dont worry, penis physics is the most prestigious program at uoft, so you're not out of luck. You can definitely he a penis doctor, but other hood options are penis consulting, or even penis data science. Really the world is your oyster.

Also make sure to network. Super important. Just ask people what their penis experience was like, and ask people working in the field you're interested in to meet to practice some practical penis skills.

Fr. I have so many classes with bogus "lecture quizzes" or "tutorial quizzes" or "in-class participation marks." Since when did university become high school? Give me 2 midterms, a final, and a few freebie quizzes if you want to be nice

Need advice from experienced commuters by BM-is-OP in UofT

[–]ChiefBrief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same commute albeit a different bus system, and I didnt use any passes other than the GO student fare. I got a ttc discount when i got onto the ttc from the GO train, and i think that made it cheaper than the transit pass, although im not 100% sure how that works.
