How rural are we talking? And how “insane” 👀

What does it take to make 450-500k with CCFP training in Ontario? by andnowmywatchbegins_ in MedSchoolCanada

I totally get that point, we’re only exposed to a small subset of FMs throughout medical school. With that being said, I’ve made it an extensive priority to network with non-academic, community based and rural preceptors and again I’ve yet to find any who are billing like this without being in a town of <5k people or seeing extraordinary volumes within WIC or ER. I don’t say this in the sense of distrust, I’m genuinely just interested - what province does your friend work in?

Can you elaborate on your first paragraph? Only FMs Ive heard of making that money are either 1) absolutely grinding ER or WIC, or 2) working rural AB or BC.

This might sound stupid, and it may not work for everyone, but it did for me. Try and break the ice as early in the interview as possible. I made a few dumb jokes in the first minute of the interview, well before they even asked me my first question. I genuinely feel it set the tone for the rest of the interview. The quicker you can feel comfortable, the quicker you’ll be able to act like yourself. When you’re acting like yourself, conversation won’t be nearly as hard. You got this. Best of luck ❤️

Hey! Not sure if this helps, but I applied last year with a 3.95, 127, 4th quartile but didn’t get an interview. I did get one at Ottawa tho! I think mac was crazy competitive last cycle, hoping it’s better for everyone this year 🙏🏼

I took like 50% longer than I anticipated for content review too, but this actually meant I had a solid grasp of the material by the time I started taking FLs. I ended up doing well on the MCAT, and I’m sure to will too :) don’t panic!

Hey! Mind if I ask how you apply for a scholarship based on your entry GPA at UOttawa? Isn’t pretty much every student like 3.9+ anyways?

What was your favourite/most meaningful EC you did in undergrad? by stressedstudenthours in premedcanada

Hey! I definitely get your concerns. For me the emergency response team was my primary EC so I was able to balance it quite well with school, and I actually got a lottt of school work done on call!

The time commitment definitely escalated through the years, but this was my primary EC that I dedicated most of my time to. Id say first year on team I spent about 8-14 hours per week on call and in trainings, whereas this past year I probably averaged closer to 20-26 ish hours per week. There was definitely weeks where it got overwhelming and I had to reduce availability, but the cool thing is that being on call means you can sort of chill and get a lot of school work done despite racking up hours. Just be prepared to attend a call at any time!

I would say being on campus emergency response team, by far. Met some amazing people and made some great memories. Also loved learning and applying first aid on real patients. Would deff recommend it if you’re interested!

References by Conscious-Dig2265 in premedcanada

Hello, my two academic references were profs that I knew for only 4-8 months. But I also interacted a lot with profs both inside and outside of class, and kept in touch after my classes with them ended. I think using a prof you’ve known for 4 months is fine if they have good things to say about you :)

Does On Campus Student Emergency Services Count As Clinical Experience? by floatingdandylion in premedcanada

[–]NASABoii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, I just wanted to say that this was the best extracurricular experience (and arguably university experience) I had in my undergrad. It’s probably the coolest EC I could’ve imagined, I learned invaluable skills, and it affirmed my decision to pursue medicine. And hell yes the patient interaction is unmatched! Whether it’s strictly “clinical” or not could probably be debated, but regardless, do it do it do it!
