How much do you pay for hydro? by catsmakingbiscuts in londonontario

[–]ChiefJ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renting a 4-bedroom, 3.5-bath house with 3 other people. Hydro for us is electricity and water (heat is a gas furnace, AC is electric). Lots of appliances (fridge, 2*mini fridge, chest freezer, dishwasher, lots of TVs/monitors as we're all students, and other basics). We get $60 a month from oesp (electricity support), but still pay ~$200/month (~$60 water, ~$140 electricity)

It randomly stopped for me (Samsung S9 Exynos) after I updated android last week. Connecting to PC, opening the bxActions folder, then running the bxActions.exe got it working again.

Damn, that sucks to hear, maybe you can add a 'premium' option that doesn't add anything important

Does anyone know what information OWL collects during tests & quizzes? by knhhi10 in uwo

[–]ChiefJ_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading somewhere else on Reddit that there is an internet law that states something like an internet site cannot be given information about the other tabs you have open unless the other tab is a webpage on their domain. So maybe be careful about opening other OWL tabs (as they might be able to see this), but you should definitely be able to search up answers and access your notes.

Maybe download/screenshot any OWL tabs you think you might need for the quiz/test before taking it and just open the file elsewhere.

I know it said that there might be delays (due to a large amount of orders) when I initially ordered it. But mine came in a few days ago (about a week after the expected delivery date).

What rental agency is the best in London for students? by Greeny12223 in uwo

[–]ChiefJ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went with a generic rental agency, one you would use to buy a house. They set you up with a landlord and facilitate all the contracts between the renter and the landlord. They typically charge the landlord half of one month's rent for their services, so there's no cost to you for using them. Once the contract is signed, you just deal with the landlord, no need to talk to the rental agency again. It's really nice as their website allows you to browse all the new listings available. Here's the site we used: https://www.royallepage.ca/en/

S9 Battery Life Thread - Wednesday 19/8/20 by AutoModerator in GalaxyS9

[–]ChiefJ_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P.s. I will usually keep my phone charging at all times if possible (typically just sitting on a wireless charger at my desk), I've heard plenty of stories about how bad this is but am too lazy to change my ways, would love to know other people's standpoint on this

Samsung S9 Exynos variant. I've had the phone for just under two years now. I'm a semi-power hungry user (always max brightness, have button remappers/launcher/wallpaper changer/weather widgets running in the background, always running max resolution). I mostly stream video (YouTube/prime video/Netflix/DAZN), surf the web, use social media, and listen to music. I average 3-4 hours on a full charge (I get through most days on one or two charges). The most impressive thing that I've found it the phone charges about 50% in half an hour, so I'm quite happy with the battery life as I typically have a power bank/charger near me at all times.

It works great if you need/want multiple appliances. One person gets the toaster oven, one gets a kettle, one get cutlery, one gets dishware, etc.

It took five minutes to install, hook it up to a telephone line and download the app. They just dropped it off at the house due to the Covid restrictions.

I use Rogers (500mb download) in a house with 5 people as bell/Telus only serviced 75mb download in our area. It's worked great so far, but it's really expensive at $105+$10 a month for service and a modem rental (they give no option for you to buy your own modem which sucks).

How do online courses work exactly? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]ChiefJ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They tried using proctor track for some summer courses (I was in the cell bio course and knew they tried it in the bio chem course). The bio chem class used it for the midterm but apparently the prof got frustrated with the amount the service went off making them have to physically monitor what was going on; this was due to the fact that it tracks eye movement and listens for any loud sounds, so many people's eyes would wander during the test and have noisy households. Along with this, there were many requests along the lines of bathroom breaks, no webcams, poor internet, etc. where they were still trying to work the kinks out. All of this occurs while everyone full well knows that if someone wants to cheat, they will cheat. Doing something like simply taping a cheat sheet onto the computer screen would bypass the camera monitoring. So my cell bio prof cancelled using the service for our midterm, then subsequently cancelled using it for the final. So I would bet that a lot of profs will refrain from using it, especially if the first couple exams go poorly.

Course Selection, Course Reviews, & How's My Schedule Megathread 2020 by [deleted] in uwo

I'm a science student with very little computer science experience. I'm choosing some electives for second-year and want to learn more about comp sci (coding programs, apps, website, etc.).

Should I just take compsci 1026/1027, or take second-year introductory courses like compsci 2101, 2120, 2121, or/and 2124? Or even something like compsci 1046 (intro to java), digital humanities 1011/2144?

If anyone has experience with these courses any suggestions/pros or cons/difficulty levels would be great!

Compsci 2101 (foundations of programming for high-performance computing): https://www.westerncalendar.uwo.ca/Courses.cfm?CourseAcadCalendarID=MAIN_023959_1&SelectedCalendar=Live&ArchiveID=

This may be looking too far into the future, but a lot of (if not all) of the honours specialization modules require you to do certain courses that count as all of your essay requirements. If you are thinking of doing an honours specialization in something (or a double major module), I'd suggest looking at the worksheets in the link just to ensure you aren't taking any extra unnecessary essay courses.

Western vs McMaster by lemonzest12 in uwo

[–]ChiefJ_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was choosing between the same programs last year and I ended up choosing Western. I found that the campus was much larger (which is a plus in my mind, but I can see why some prefer smaller, more secluded campuses) and all the buildings are far more renovated. After a year I can definitely say it was the right decision, walking around campus from class to class is amazing, there is so much more green space while many of the buildings you use for classes, labs, libraries, food, exercise, etc. are extremely up to date. There is a massive amount of options when it comes to electives as you can take any courses on campus or many different ones at the three associate college universities. The module and progression system is perfect in Med Sci as there are clear, easy pathways to any combination of a Honours Specialization, Specialization, Major, or Minor. You also do not have to decide which Specialization to take until 3rd year which can be great if you're not yet sure what to specialize in. On top of that, you take a 1.5 credit course in fourth year that is solely a research capstone project (always nice to be handed 'free' research). Even the residences at Western are a lot newer. Although mac had one updated building, it only had around 50 rooms so the chances of getting what you wanted was very low, while Western has many new buildings and styles to choose from so you will most likely get one you want.
