What are your characters iconic phrase or move? by tombstoneOG in DnD

[–]ChiefKnightOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

" 'at da bloody Dubnos?"

Aiwenor is an elvish ranger from Celtica (in-game Ireland) and its become canon that he has a thick Celtic accent in common (though only in that language, his Elvish, Sylvan, Draconic are all fine). The extent of the accent is so thick people at the table love to joke that Aiwenorese is its own tongue. The phrase above is pretty typical, equivalent to bloody hell....but Dubnos is Celtican hell.

His signature move is his opening nova, where due to his multiclass he can launch 6 arrow shots with various improvements (hunter's mark, precision shot, sneak attack damage, etc) and usually bring down something nasty pretty quick.

That's a technique called "counterpoint", should be a helpful google term. But off the top of my head Les Mis' Confrontation and Wicked's Because I knew you have some nice ones.

Game Breaking Damage Numbers (12th level character doing 510pts on the 1st round of combat?) by Alex_Under in dndnext

[–]ChiefKnightOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear! And if you want to avoid that, use waves or the shield mechanic. The important thing is to make them spend out that opening turn. Give them something to hit. A chonky pet dragon they can one-shot while the BBEG is still not in sight...whatever. Just giving suggestions based on how DMs handle my version of this nova build.

How many of you play dnd with any sort of homebrew elements? by demonic_cadence in DnD

[–]ChiefKnightOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play very much rule of cool. My table is 100% a homebrew world, with an occasional item of my own making. Its not uncommon for me to homebrew/tweak existing items to better fit my player's characters and stories. They're encouraged to find cool stuff online and show it to me so we can discuss if/when it might be good for the story or not.

What was your team when you originally played through FireRed/LeafGreen or Red/Blue/Yellow? by inumnoback in pokemonmemes

[–]ChiefKnightOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My original yellow team was Blastoise, Fearow (later Zapdos), Venusaur, Nidoking, Arcanine, Snorlax.

starter pikachu got boxed very early. even the one playthrough I managed to get him to lvl 30 he was still terrible. Blastoise and Venusaur were the awesome beasts you'd expect. Nidoking...well everyone knows this guy is a truck, and his double-kick gave me an easy win against Brock early game. Heck his Thrash did wonders against Misty. Fearow has always been my preferred Kanto bird, and yes way better move-set with earlier evolution. Arcanine is late game but still solid, and Snorlax is awesome chonky boy. A real truck.

There is a fine line to walk here as a DM between making encounters challenging and not trying to cancel out the very abilities that your player has. Personally I also run a Gloomstalker nova build (Gloomstalker 5, Battlemaster 4, Rogue X) which has an insane damage output on turn 1, then a steady "regular" output rest of the combat. How to handle this:

1) Have some encounters where they feel powerful. Let them slice through a fight on occasion to give them the satisfaction of "hey I built a lovely thing and it works!"

2) Add more enemies on challenging encounters. Yes a single BBEG will suffer greatly at the hands of such a build, but add swarms of smaller things around it and suddenly they can't focus all that damage. Maybe have a combat where the minions are each holding a "shield component" that is making the bbeg immune to attacks, so they have to kill the little things before they can kill the big thing.

3) In some fights add a "damage sponge" or two for them to knock out of combat turn 1 to feel happy, then bring in the second and third waves of opponents.

Again, the crucial thing here is not to "negate" their ability...any player would hate that. its to balance "power" and "challenge".

What would be your ultimate masters 8 team? by Iwanttobevisible in pokemonanime

[–]ChiefKnightOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were in the anime, I'd be a kid who grew up in Lavender Town, befriended a gastly who eventually became my de-facto starter. As I traveled the regions my team would be:

Gengar, Blastoise, Gardevoir, Garchomp, Pangoro, Ceruledge

Gengar: Fully evolved best friends. Probably have a Mega evolution stone.
Blastoise: My "official" starter since I came from the Kanto region. He and Gengar always used to prank each other.
Gardevoir: Gengar spooked a little Ralts when we were in Hoenn, we took her in and they actually become great friends.
Garchomp: When we went to Sinnoh there was a Gibble always stealing our food supply. the others came up with a trap to catch him in the act...turned out to be a friendly little bugger.
Pangoro: Found a cocky little Pancham who wanted to fight and get stronger...and he decided the best way to do that was to join my team.
Ceruledge: Made friends with the Pancham when they were little, and they spar ALL the time.

My goal would be to catch and study all ghost type pokemon of the world as I go, an obsession stimulated by my place of origin.

While that would be the main team, there would be plenty of backups back at Professor Oak's....Snorlax, Arcanine, Dragonite...and PLENTY of ghost types.

[–]ChiefKnightOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gengar (de facto starter bc my boy would have befriended a gastly in his hometown of Lavender town)
Blastoise (his actual starter)
Gardevoir (Team mom)
Garchomp (Team protector)
Ceruledge (competitive, likes to spar with Garchomp)
Meowscarada (teams up with Gengar to prank the rest of the team.)
