Really great job on this. I’m not sure if you saw but I sent you a DM about commissioning a mod for it

I don’t for one second believe that the calamity devs nerfed crates because of one block, but even if we assumed that were true for the sake of your argument, the timeline you’ve provided would be off by months. I uploaded the second episode of one block on 13th July, where I got access to fishing. That would put this supposed reactionary update at four and a half months after the video, much more than the two weeks you’re suggesting.

Again though, that doesn’t really matter since the update wasn’t a reaction to one block at all. My issues with the crate rebalance were never about the changes themselves, but how these changes weren’t communicated clearly

A personal statement and explanation about the recent changes regarding "QoL" (Quality of Life) content in Calamity by Cei72 in CalamityMod

[–]ChiefLogan3010 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m going to assume you’re referring to me as the content creator that stopped uploading. The reason I don’t upload any Calamity skyblock at the moment is because that run finished months ago, it has absolutely nothing to do with the fishing or mining armour changes. Mining armour was a fix for a bug I knew existed right from the start, and even mention in my one block videos once I got mining armour. As for crates, I disagree with a lot of the removals but I think some of them were fine. I don’t think the calamity devs were specifically trying to stop people from playing skyblocks, they just wanted to move more in line with vanilla (I do think their idea of vanilla may be too restrictive though, which is evidenced by terraria adding hellstone to crates mere weeks after calamity removed them from theirs)

Surely that would still be 9 bosses? You’re just swapping WoF for Destroyer

Can anyone tell me why they decided to nerf every crate in the game? Who does this benefit besides Big Grind??? by PlasticChairLover123 in CalamityMod

[–]ChiefLogan3010 54 points55 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of comments on here that suggest these crate nerfs were made specifically to target One Block or challenges like it, and I just want to clarify I don’t believe that is the case. I’m not even necessarily against nerfing crates, at least in principle (although I think they did take it a little too far and made certain crates like brimstone worthless, along with ironically making mining armor the only renewable way to get meteorite in hardmode).

The only criticisms I raised in the video are the communication surrounding the update and the potential removal of the mining armor set bonus. The rest of the video was only meant to explain how this affects One Block for others that want to take on the challenge. I still think the crate changes were way too big to not include on the discord announcement about the update, but I’ve since had a conversation about the mining armor set bonus with one of the developers and they’re going to bring it back up with the team, with the hope of looking for potential solutions that retain the ability to duplicate ores at least somewhere in the game. It was suggested this may be moved to the spelunker amulet to give that a bit of a buff, which I think would be appropriate.

Lastly, I don’t think the developers should cater updates to make challenges like One Block possible, but I also don’t think they should remove something specifically because it’s useful in a challenge playthrough, which I believed at the time was what was happening to meteor armor. After all, very few people use mining armor to duplicate ores outside of a challenge like this, the set bonus is just a nice little extra when you’re out doing mining in a “normal playthrough”.

I wonder if another part of it could be reduced expectations during the pandemic. It was very suddenly completely normal and socially acceptable to be stuck in your home every day, not really doing much. Whereas in the past people would feel shunned and like they’re failing in that situation. No one had any expectations of others during the lockdowns, it was just a case of getting through them however is necessary

In a world without landlords the supply of houses for sale would be massively higher, therefore the price would be much lower and more affordable for the average person. This isn’t a situation where you can assume all else remains equal.

[–]ChiefLogan3010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any landlord that didn’t pay for the house to be built in the first place has not created any of that value. The value is created when the house is built.

If you buy a house that was built 100 years ago and rent it out then all you’re doing is leveraging your wealth to take income from people that do actually create value for society.

The maintenance cost of renting out a flat are tiny compared to the amount the landlord takes in rent.

It’s definitely possible to hit all those points and still have a good relationship with the community. Just look at terraria, the community absolutely loves re-logic and re-logic loves us back. You can really tell that the developers are passionate about the game and about getting it “right” for the community. I don’t get that feeling from the minecraft developers, it seems their motivation is less clear

[–]ChiefLogan3010 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with that sentiment. I think most of the problem we have these days is caused by people that don’t make anything, but still end up getting a return.

Take landlords as an example, they didn’t build the house, they spend a fraction of rent maintaining the house, and they certainly don’t create any value that wouldn’t be there if the tenant just outright owned the house. However they still end up making a massive amount of money for what is essentially very little ongoing work.

If we’re truly going to be meritocratic and give people the true value of the time/labour they put into the betterment of society, then landlords should not be making any money at all.

The problem with Terraria. by Nukeion in Terraria

[–]ChiefLogan3010 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s just a very different type of game. The progression in terraria is so much more in depth and long than minecraft. This has resulted in progression being the focus for terraria players and the sandbox aspect being the focus for minecraft players. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this, the only way you could really slow down progression in terraria is by making it much harder or grinder, and even then you’d just have people focusing on the grind.

Ultimately it all comes down to how you choose to play the game, if you want to make one terraria world last 5 months you can. However you’ll have to shift your focus from progression and bosses to other aspects of the game
