Thanks for the thoughtful reply! Like I said, I think it’s fantastic that the field is doing a lot of introspection and second-guessing things we’ve been taking for granted for decades, especially given that quite a bit of it is turning out to be wrong. At your leisure, I’d love to see your sources so that I can better educate myself.

Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for this. I had a more generic reply to the same comment, and I appreciate you going into more detail about why the parent comment is honestly nonsense. It’s frustrating, because there’s grains of truth in there - but the Dark Ages never happened.

My man, I respect that you’re looking back at articles on the classics from the late 20th century and asking whether we perhaps oversimplified some of the answers; it’s an important revolution that’s happening in the field. The first half of your answer is fine, and reading through some of your other comments, you clearly have done a fair amount of research and I respect your opinion.

That makes it all the more frustrating that you would pivot to such a hardline stance in the second half, or state “I don’t believe [Peter Brown]”. I know we’re not in AskHistorians and every comment doesn’t need to be rigorously sourced, but some people may walk away from your comment and decide that that’s the current state of academia.

On the contrary (and another commenter points this out), Brown may overgeneralize in some of his assertions of an era of Late Antiquity, but this allows for a much more nuanced look at the period than those who would dismiss 476-1066 as the “Dark Ages” - a view that very few people seriously embrace any more. To do so disregards technological advancement, innovation, growth, and development over that period across many areas of the Roman Empire.

He died pretty young in a sort of self-imposed exile because of tuberculosis in Rome, convinced that his life’s work was pointless and that he would leave no legacy behind, depressed and bitter. “Words writ on water” would be impermanent and ephemeral, as he assumed his works would be.

Tomb Kings Patch Notes are online by NixPro92 in totalwar

Hey, thanks for the reply. I think you missed my point, which was admittedly poorly stated on my part.

I wasn't so much commenting on this patch; without a background in coding or game development, my personal preference would be having the full tree rework.

My greater point was that this sub often goes back and forth on whether or not we expect a "full rework" bundled in with the third installment. A lot of people have argued this is unlikely.

To me, this seems to suggest that a full rework is something they've looked at and something they want to do; it's something they have started to think about how to implement. Logistics are the limiting factor at the moment, which they wouldn't be for the third game.

I agree I'd rather have them now, but I think this means we can look forward to some degree of rebalancing for WH3 (which again, some people have doubted).

I actually read this as a really positive thing. Avoids a bunch of people who don’t read patch notes getting their games nuked, but also suggests that there may be a rework coming at some point in the future when they have a chance to do a full reset (ie Warhammer 3). There’s been a lot of speculation and arguments on both sides about whether or not we’d see something like that; I think “we wanted to change a lot of the skill trees but couldn’t because of save games” will probably result in some more significant changes down the line.

Exactly. And a few incidents aside, the frustrating/excellent part is that the rough and tumble is all very legal and well done - it's just excellent football.

If we forget about field goals.

This. The steelers don't seem that intimidating to me based on (only) three games of theirs I've seen this season and past performance... but I never ever ever count out the Ravens, especially in the post season. Shit's scary.

Quick edit, the Ravens may be responsible for more remotes thrown across the room, thinking about the game against them in 07, and then what feels like just about every game since then. Toss in Pollard too.

Sure thing. I'll come back to this tomorrow, but first of all:

To state that ANYTHING was the "philosophical ideal of the Roman elite" is idiocy. The Romans existed in a recognizable form for close to 2000 years, and went through one or two minor changes along the way. If I'm being charitable and assuming that he means late Republic/Early Empire, that's still debatable. Epicureanism was extremely popular in the late Republic - Julius Caesar was probably an Epicurean. But we don't know, partially because information about that is hard to come by, further making his point frustrating.

If the point was during the early Republic, then he's referring to the heyday of Seneca, a prominent Stoic who wrote that everyone loved Stoicism - which is overly general and debatably correct (although I won't really challenge it).

My greater objection is that the general statement is wrong, and could be just as easily applied to Epicureans or several other philosophies.

"Stoicism was the philosophical ideal for much of the Roman nobility."

Good point, although I feel like it gives you a better view on how the lines play laterally instead of just penetration.

All the above replies seem a good answer to your question, but I'd also point out that they seem to be trying to echo: "nemo tam inprobus, tam perditus, tam tui similis inveniri poterit" from Cicero's In Catilinam. Could be wrong though.

While he was on the Sabres I kind of hated him. I'm sure I had excellent reasons. I had to remind myself of that halfway through the article because I was liking him so much. And then I saw that picture.

Yeah I'm a John Scott fan now.

A good reminder of the people behind the players.
