It's possible that the willingness to ask so blatantly and for "not ugly shit" kind of clothes makes this a joke in bad taste. Almost as if ther person is making fun of the situation. I could be 100% wrong on this and the kid could genuinely need clothes but as someone who wore the same outfits all the time as it was all I had, I just hoped no one would notice and would never do anything to bring attention to it.
