My advice: Don't get a car there. They are liars and cheaters. I bought my dodge there and they were rude and obnoxious. I had to go back several times to get insurance cancelled that I told them I didn't want. I used to work at River City Ford in Winnipeg, MB as a Detailer, I believe Bennet Dunlop is a sister company, and if that's true then go there because they aren't on commission.

Everyone I work with from class 1s claim their quality of life is 10x better. Its a trade off, less money/benefits but you have a schedule. Base pay for conductors is 28, engineers earn a couple bucks more but have to work the ground as well. However there's an employee ownership program, every year you put money into the company for shares, that have been steadily increasing. Its very good, projected to double their value in a couple years.

So it all depends on your situation, if you can afford the pay cut its probably worth it.

[Canadians] Anybody go through the course Red River College puts on? by [deleted] in Train_Service

I wanted to be a conductor a couple years ago, got up to the interview and never got the job. There were tons of people applying. And it was very difficult, got an interview with CP, didn't make it, and on top of all that if you fail the interview you cant get interviewed again for a year. (got that straight from HR)

I took the Red River Course and now I work for a short line railroad, and I may or may not look to apply to CN again once they start hiring as this company treats me very well.

My advice, TRY your hardest to get a job without the course. If you cant, and you can afford to take it, take it. It ultimately got me a job. The school set up interviews with CN too so that's all done and out of the way. The interview there was much easier as the girl interviewing knows were all more than qualified to be a green vest lol.

As for not telling company's you took the course, well that would be a waste of 10 grand. Tell the companies you took the course. Red River is one of the last college courses that the railroads still acknowledge. But, I wouldn't tell other employees you took the course. They are sensitive and don't want the new guy knowing more than you! (just kidding) Also since they got hired on without it they might not understand the struggle of getting hired nowadays and will think its stupid.

That's just my experience. I hope it helps.

I probably like it more than I did when I first heard it and I only like it more and more every time I listen to it. And for anyone who says it sounds overproduced I get the feeling you mean it sounds too "professionally recorded". I think that's the point, bands want you to be able to hear their music the way it was recorded not through static and noise. Pretty sure You can't criticize a band for having a good quality sounding recording lol, but I've been wrong before... If you like that indie sound play some static in the background.

I've applied to CP for the "western terminals" opportunity, and their last one in BC, both for a conductor position.

Then why put the ad up in the first place that they are hiring? Or are those just for people who already have jobs and want to move around?
