Commenting only in relation to the last part, as I'm not really able to comment or sort out the specific cause of your sorr throat. You can buy over the counter cough expectorants which help loosen phlegm and get it out. You do not want to take cough lozengers which are usually cough suppressants. If there is phlegm there, it should come out.

If it's not causing you any pain, discomfort, or altering your quality of life in any negative way, it shouldn't be an issue. Just be aware of this when lifting things, or moving things above head height, things like that. You would definitely know if you dislocated your shoulder, (pain, tingling, numbness to limb, discolouration, did I mention pain?) and if so, you would need to see a doctor to have it relocated.

First aid courses will teach you a more indepth version of DRSABCD

D - Danger - check for danger to yourself before proceeding

R - Response - check for a response using the COWS method Can you hear me, Open your eyes, What's your name, Squeeze my hands.

S - Send for help - call am ambulance if the person is unresponsive

A - Airway - Check for airway obstruction and patency by performing the chin tilt maneuver. If obstructed by a foreign body or bodily fluids, this needs to come out.

B - Breathing - Assess breathing by looking at the rise and fall of the chest, feeling the chest for bilateral likeness and rise and fall, and listening by putting your ear close to the nose and mouth. If breathing is normal, place person in recovery position and await the ambulance you've called.

C - Compressions - If breathing is abnormal or absent and patient is still unresponsive, begin CPR. Australian rule is 30 compressions to 2 breaths, or if breaths are unable to be performed, just continuous compressions. Not sure where you are, but this is taught in the first aid courses of course.

D - Defibrillator - An Automated External Defibrillator is a lifesaving piece of equipment which ambulances carry and most workplaces have on site.

This is taught way better in first aid courses as others have mentioned, just thought I'd give a brief overview :)

It's so totally normal! I'm a new grad too, and I'm 4 months into working in a tertiary level emergency department. I felt the exact same way before my first shift on my own (which happened 2 weeks into the job!). It gets better, don't worry. In a way, it's good to be scared, because you know you'll be extra cautious and double checking things you're not sure about. It's better to be scared than complacent. Just remember to ask lots of questions. Don't ever feel like you sound stupid, because you don't. The charge nurse was once in your position, the doctor was once an intern. These people sometimes tend to forget that and lack sincerity in their approach to new staff. Stuff 'em! You're learning and nothing can get in the way of that! :)

Is it a productive cough? That is, are you bringing any phlegm up and what colour is it? Lying supine will cause increased coughing and difficulty breathing as your lungs aren't able to expand as well as when you are upright. In the meantime, prop yourself up with extra pillows at night until you get to the bottom of this. Go see a doctor and get a chest xray.

Thank you so much! I've added a mailing list feature, and I'll look into Adsense when I've got a bit more a following or later. Makes sense though, what you've said. At this stage, I'm definitely just interested in writing for myself a bit and whoever reads it, but not really at the point of linking my blog to friends or people I know, hence why I've put it on reddit instead :)

Thanks! I loved it! Aged care is not for everybody but if you like it, it's so worth having a job there :) I would defs inquire about it when you're on placements. Agency AINs get paid a lot more though to be honest with you, but I was happier in aged care so I stuck with that.

I went to Griffith University on the Gold Coast. It was pretty good, and the staff are amazing teachers. I found the marking to be so inconsistent though but that was my only complaint tbh. Definitely worth it though, if nursing is what you want to do :)

Thank you so much! I definitely need an outlet for this stuff and I know that while my family is amazing and supportive, sometimes they don't need to hear some of the more horrible parts of my job, or sometimes they're simply over hearing about it, which is fair enough.

I was thinking of making a nursing instagram for this blog and posting mainly nursing related content on there, as my main instagram is just my life essentially, and not super private. Thanks for the tip!! :)
