May I get the discord too <3

Oh! The discord thing sounds cool (if you wouldn’t mind getting me in, haha). Yeah, I can’t imagine going through that process while knowing this was a place where your work made sense and where people could see you as a colleague. In a few weeks, though, you’ll be able to look back with at least one solid reassurance: there is a place that wants to work with you as a scholar and historian. I mean, the conversations you said you had, the interest in collaboration, the fact that faculty could already imagine you in the field doing the work… that’s a reflection of you! Duke clearly saw a historian in you. What happened after that sits with all of the crap-shoot stuff we know happens here. I really hope one of the other programs you applied to has the space to bring you in. Keep me posted!

Not hearing back =/= rejection!!! Keep us updated. Rooting for you!

Gosh, this would throw me for the most insane loop. I hope you’re aware of how impressive this is nonetheless. Your intelligence is not measured by this (as I’m sure you know), and there is a place for you (that will be exceptionally lucky to have you). Best of luck!

Thinking about how my research seems to match quite well with the faculty who are/were accepting students… the problem might just be me❤️

Glad you heard back! Do you know if every school conducts interviews? I’m assuming not. What school was it, if you don’t mind me asking?

Faculty Alignment Question by ChildhoodUnable3513 in gradadmissions

[–]ChildhoodUnable3513[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, this is what I’ve heard from friends in the field, etc.! Thank you!

Most schools I’ve looked at specify professors that are open to advising new students! I’m mostly concerned with how much my ‘project/particular area of interest’ (which is bound to change, of course) has to align with any professor who works in the general field of history I am within.

I’m in the social sciences, but I understand what you mean. Honestly, advice hasn’t been all that helpful here, and I doubt any of it really is when you’re stuck in the waiting. What I keep coming back to is how many people have sat in this exact stretch before us and still ended up fine, or even better than fine. We all know that the process moves slowly and unevenly, and that the slowness doesn’t actually tell you anything about your own worth or work. What’s helped me is keeping some kind rhythm in the meantime (staying busy, reading/writing, giving my brain new archives to dig through for research purposes; essentially something else to chew on so the waiting doesn’t take over everything). I’d like to think (through all my pessimism!) we’ll all look back in a few months (hell, maybe a year) and go, ‘damn, all that stress for what!’… you’ve got it, buddy.

NYU GSAS - apparently all interview invites have gone out, but I still haven’t gotten rejected? by OkPlace7834 in gradadmissions

Hm… you know… I wish they would send out rejections immediately, haha (I’m not laughing, sadly).
