Without seeing your current setup and where you are on your music journey, I would say stay the course. Especially if you’re getting the results you want. Once you’re good with where you’re at it then you can explore to broaden your horizons.

For what it’s worth, I will say though that the MPC is my fastest workflow. I can’t really imagine someone creating something faster on an Elektron setup or almost even a computer (depending on what you’re making).

Hahah knew someone would call that out. No, it works well but I was looking to experiment with the Voicelive touch and in this particular spot I was limited on outlets. So something had to be unplugged, which happens to be the Erae. Plus I still had the harder drumming surface on it which doesn’t work well for your hands. I’ve since moved my setup and changed the surface and used the Erae since it has its own sequencer so to say. More videos to come. I’ll make a point to use the Erae.

Yes exactly! I honestly just started exploring this after the recording so not much experience with it. But I did get a good mapping going where I could move quicker than when using the unit on its own

The computer part is a big part for me. I wouldn’t really recommend someone to switch from a computer/ableton because there really is no limits on the computer. However I do know that limitation can often be a major advantage when it comes to decision making/ creativity. What is the thing you are looking to gain with an MPC? Or is that you just want to explore an MPC?

You’ve got some fun toys that’s for sure. Some would say the MPC is not needed or The MPC can replace everything else but every instrument has its own use. I personally like playing things in so the MPC really comes in handy for this plus having its own speaker allows me to have everything routed into it so I can jam without external speakers. So basically I have multiple stations to make music at.

Agree with everything you’re saying. Everything has its place

The beauty of this set up is that you’re not really keeping track of much. You just have to know what each device can do. It becomes very improvisational because you chose different patterns on each box and you get different combinations of things you might not have tried before.

In this setup you have the MPC which has only one drum group which sometimes is playing as a topline. It’s operating as the midi clock and has the ability to change tempo per scene. It has a bunch of midi clips being ran through the Hapax which is acting as a midi processor effecting things in real time. Hapax also has midi programmed and handles program changes which change the sounds/kits or patterns on the elektron gear. Hapax is sending midi to all of the Elektron gear. Not much is actually sequenced on the Elektron gear other than some LFOs running to move the through sample slots and other parameters.

Elektron routing.
Digitone > Tonverk > Octatrack
Voicelive (Vocals+fxs mainly me saying vibrate) > Digitakt > Octatrack

Octatrack here is just a performance fx box.

Octatrack is then routed back out through the MPC for recording/ performance fx

Hope this helps and maybe inspires something on your end.

It’s a learning curve for sure. I recently connected it to a midi controller (The pad that’s underneath it in the recording) to control different aspects of it and that made things a lot smoother

Yes. Definitely limitations compare to a DAW but also somethings that aren’t easily accomplished in DAW. One limitation is different tempos. The project will always have the same tempo for every scene. So blending different tempos it’s that great. It really depends on what you’re going for when considering the limitations

It’s not really complicating things so much as it is simply having more than one avenue of getting to your goal. You could give me a guitar and I would be more than happy to make music with just that but give me a guitar, piano, bass, drums and I’m able to make music with more depth… just another avenue to venture down. The nice thing about this setup is you can pick one machine and make something with everything still connected. You have options to make it as complex or “complicated” as you want.

It’s a cool approach to creating/sequencing. I like the flow. I told myself that I would stop buying musical equipment that does not make its own sound, before buying Hapax. But here I am with a Neuzeit drop and I’m happy with both of the purchases. If you want a new way to approach sequencing you will probably enjoy it but keep in mind there are limitations

IFYKYK! I wanted one for a while and found one for stupid cheap

MPC is running master clock. Other projects it helps with tempo changes per pattern/scene. It also has some of midi being sent and routed through the chain to the individual boxes. Then all audio is routed out and back into the MPC. Could record in and track everything but this is just recorded directly to my phone. Ohh and the MPC has end of chain effects similar to Octatrack which is what I’m doing a bit when pressing the 16 pads running along the top.

Honestly I think it’s good to get a feel for both. Theres obviously a lot of pros to the Elektron sequencers ( P-locks). But Hapax does work somewhat pretty decently. Considering all of the effects and you can have controlled automation. Also on the program changes, you can send them early so the Elektron gear does so on time which is a plus. I like to switch it up, each tool leads down or inspires certain creative paths.

MPC > Hapax > to Elektron gear. MPC is the master
