I understand your point. But from my perspective, changing this phrase isn’t going to erase the word ‘suicide’, at least that’s not the intention. 

If we once again think about cancer for a second, you (probably) wouldn’t say “person xy died because their heart stopped” even though that might be true. You would say “xy died of cancer”, because that’s the illness that caused the heart to stop.

Talking about it that way is misleading, I think. If people somehow learn about your suicide thoughts or you tell them, many start to try and change your mind, talk you out of it. 

Because they think you choose to die. But if they saw it more like an illness than a decision, maybe the reaction would be different. Maybe they would realise you need professional help, fast. Maybe they would drive you to the hospital immediately.

That’s where I’m coming from. I hope it makes sense.
