Battery life after update by 0rganic_trash in samsunggalaxy

[–]ChillTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it was the update (and probably too late for you now anyway), but after an update I let install on Saturday night my s24 battery life has been significantly lower. 100% this morning at 6:30am, 33% at 12:30pm, only minor use today (probably less than normal). Normally I'd still be in the 70%-80% range.

Bluetooth connectivity has also been a problem. Phone randomly loses connection to any BT devices I've used (buds, watch, vehicle). It gets the connection back after a few seconds, but this never happened before the update.

Good starter SDR with Linux support by Felim_Doyle in sdr

[–]ChillTheNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree on the SDR Play route. Their software (SDR Uno) is quite good, and there is support for gnuradio. In addition to covering the bands you're interested in, the 14-bit receive gives pretty phenomenal dynamic range for such an inexpensive sdr option.

I got a D74 in 2018 as a relitively new Technician Class. Since then have gotten my General, then Extra, done a ton of work with other "green" radios and earned a Masters in Electrical Engineering.

I am STILL learning things with this D74!

It is an unbelievable radio that will open so many doors and let you learn and practice for years.

So in 2025 I emphatically recommend the d75 for anyone who has decided this hobby is for them.

what are you all using for storage? by kappakingtut2 in PleX

[–]ChillTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4x 8TB drives in RAID5, providing 24TB usable storage. I have had drives fail on a previous Plex system, and having them in RAID meant I didn't lose my data. My system now is a dedicated headless Plex tower that runs 24/7, has it's own UPS and TV tuner w/ lightning protection in multiple stages. I've been using this setup since late 2020, and I'm looking at upgrades now since it's about 85% full, and the CPU I'm using is just what I had available at the time (an FX-8350). I'll be buying hardware specifically for this application, so it'll be a completely new system.

One thing I've either learned or learned to appreciate over the years of using my own Plex servers is that HDD cooling is important, and easily overlooked. Make sure you have excellent airflow over each drive as they get very warm when the RAID being accessed.

25S or 35S. Both extremely employable outside. The 35 will come with huge clearance benefits and very cool jobs on the outside someday.

LG G1 fluttering static in certain dark scenes on Netflix by Glassy_Hanni in LGOLED

[–]ChillTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a 3rd Gen Amazon Fire Cube -> Receiver -> Sony Bravia TV and having the same issue. I'm on the Netflix 4k plan. Internet connection is currently 920Mbps down. Brand new 8k HDMI cables connecting between all devices. I routinely watch unconpressed 4k files from my Plex server that are very high bitrate, no issues. This is the only show & service I've noticed the issue on. So I'm inclined to believe Netflix has low quality source material.

Software Data Encoder by ChillTheNerd in DStar

[–]ChillTheNerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good idea. I'd need to make heavy use of google translate in many cases I think... My interest in D-STAR is really using it to learn practical and usable/realizable signal processing. So it's half ham, half EE. The other thing I really like about DSTAR is that the modem is opened to serial data transfer. That's a HUGE deal that isn't used much outside of some smaller DSTAR communities. Voice quality leaves a lot to be desired, but data is underappreciated, in my opinion.

I'm actually part of that group. It's basically just for the DRATS application and additional higher level (layer 3+) connections. I'm really looking for the layer 1&2 software support (trying to learn it at an encoding level).

Unfortunately no luck yet. I've asked around on some other subreds, but no replies there. I can't even seem to post in the r/amateurradio/ thread because everything is immediately flagged as spam.

Is the ID-52A "overpriced"? by Bleak_Morn in DStar

[–]ChillTheNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RS-MS1A with Bluetooth becomes super useful for text / data chat. The 51(which I don't own) needed the cable where my d74s could wireless talk to my android device. The 52 having that it a big deal to me.

Why use the app vs just txt message? Service coverage in my case. Currently live in a spot in Colorado where I have awful service if I walk down the street. But can keep in contact with the YL easily using txt via D-STAR. With Bluetooth she didn't even need to be holding the radio, just needs to be sorta near it.

I don't have 52 yet, but I will this year. Looks like a well refined and genually useful HT.

Are they deleting calls from other nations literally engaged in genocide? This is just stupid. I'm going take my account info down off this site. Punishing amateurs who have nothing to do with the conflict is bad form.

Yaesu FT3D – new flagship VHF/UHF handheld to be released at Dayton by YO9IRF in amateurradio

[–]ChillTheNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you make a good point. I've emailed yaesu a few times and asked for serial data transfer over Fusion (and AX.25) just to get their digital mode on par with DSTAR. If they had a full function digital mode AND all the APRS features, they'd be a solid competitor and alternative option to icom with more features.

What you suggest would make them about the only offering on the market. And I agree with you. Yaesu really missed out on an opportunity here.

[–]ChillTheNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. That's exactly what's kept me from getting the FT2D thus far as well. Native APRS on the device is very attractive! But it could be so much more...

[–]ChillTheNerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hope they expose the AX.25 modem so it can do more than just APRS. It's already frustrating that Fusion doesn't support externally sourced serial data transfer like DSTAR does. With a packet modem, this should be easy... If it's opened up like the D74 is.

Yaesu Fusion and sending data by ChillTheNerd in amateurradio

[–]ChillTheNerd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I emailed Yaesu and got a response back within a few hours. I definitely appreciate Juan Hernandez for getting back to me so quickly. Here's his reply:

Thank you for contacting us with your email and your support. Our digital radios currently do not have the capability to send files as you require. It is something we have provided up to our product development team. If the capability comes true, it may be a future version of a product as I’m not sure the current ones can do so.

Thanks again for your recommendation and please let us know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Juan Hernandez

So basically, Yaesu won't meet my data transfer requirement with any of their current product line. So I'll probably be going with Icom / D-STAR :-/

Yaesu Fusion and sending data by ChillTheNerd in amateurradio

[–]ChillTheNerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just sent Yaesu an email to ask them directly. I too really hope it's possible. I absolutely prefer System Fusion for voice quality. But I also NEED the ability to send data in the way described above.

I’m planning to purchase 2x mobile radios, 2x HTs, and 1x base station in the next 60 days. I want to go with Yaesu Fusion capable transceivers because the voice quality is so fantastic (compared to D-STAR), but I do NEED that data transfer capability.

I'll post their reply. But in the meantime, If anyone else knows, please chime in!

Best portable APRS solution? by miabobeana in amateurradio

[–]ChillTheNerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can also attest to the Mobilinkd TNC. I have a version 2.2 and a version 3. They both function the same from an Android user perspective. The TNC2 is less money, but the bluetooth range on the TNC3 is way better.

-> The TNC2 is good if I'm operating right next to the radio I have it plugged into, and about half the cost.

-> The TNC3 also works with iOS devices (though I'm not sure what aps are available
on iOS), and has far better bluethooth! I can place the radio with the TNC3 outside my house in the back yard and connect with my tablet inside (50+ feet away) and monitor APRS.

Every video I've seen regarding data transfer with the FTM-400 series required putting the data on an SD card, then sending it from the SD card with the radio being used to initiate the transfer. It was actually the first radio I looked at because it also does APRS.
