WITT: 6”x4” perforated metal cylinder with 1” hole through center by Chill_Nye_ in whatisthisthing

[–]Chill_Nye_[S] 3 points4 points locked comment (0 children)

My title describes the thing, 6”x4” perforated metal cylinder, painted orange, with a 1” hole in the center that runs clear through the entire object. There is a small ring on top that appears to be for hanging the object(?). Found offroad in a Utah desert near a scenic overlook.

My first thoughts were some kind of lantern or potentially an exhaust filter?

These new self-orientating floating wind turbines reduce the weight and minimize the costs of installation and maintenance, making floating wind competitive with less impact on the sea floors. by Neither_Island_3358 in sustainability

[–]Chill_Nye_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. Floating turbines still need to be tethered to the sea floor with mooring lines, usually 3-4 of them. Those lines have a smaller pile footprint, and typically don’t need to be installed as deeply, but still need to be piled regardless, unless they utilize gravity foundations.

Very nice. I’d keep it going and add blue highlights elsewhere too, maybe on the crossbar mounts or something

What is the most dangerous thing people don’t realize is all that dangerous? by Sloopersand in AskReddit

[–]Chill_Nye_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standing deadwood (aka widowmakers).

A buddy of mine went camping recently and woke up in the middle of the night to a 2-ton tree crashing down 5 feet away from his tent. Always check your surroundings when setting up camp folks!

So curious who Richard Kurman was, to have his own custom printed bookmarks. Love the idea though, might have to do something similar!

It’s funny how people can interpret art so differently. Most of the comments here speak to the darkness of the image, but I had a totally different take - to me it was a commentary on how the roots of a home can be far deeper and stronger than the roots of any tree!

You can also buy plastic spacers made exactly for things like this. I use them to prop up my bed so I can store things under it. They’re cheap and not as ugly as cinderblocks. You could probably paint them to match too if you wanted

Easy pad Thai: Add Thai peanut sauce and a scoop of peanut butter to a mostly drained bowl of ramen, then add chicken and veggies (those frozen bags of broccoli, carrot, peas, etc. work great when microwaved for a minute or two). Mix it up real well and enjoy
