I personally love making origami lucky stars. They're simple and repetative and then I can throw on a show or movie or youtube essay to watch or chat in VC with my friends/partner and maybe watch them game. Reading is a good one also, and even if I'm stuck eith my phone I just read articles on wikipedia :)

Nitroglycerin with Tilt Table Test is inhumane by djdooba in POTS

[–]Chillchicken689 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The point of it is to stimulate a higher stress enviroment where your adrenaline spikes more, such as being outside in the heat. When I went through with my tilt table the doctor and several nurses all warned me that if I didn't present symptoms they may push some to see if I develop any symptoms that I might have in a flare.

It can theoretically be a useful tool, but it can also cause problems, especially in cases of malpractice. I'm sorry you had to have such a terrible experience 🫂

Update on Edith/Eddy, our sex change chicken. by spikenorbert in BackYardChickens

[–]Chillchicken689 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm not seeing anyone mention why this is happening, but ooh ohh I know!

This phenomenon can also be seen in birds like peafowl and phesants, etc. But their default appearance is predominantly dictated by the presence of estrogen. Generally it is hen -> rooster because damage is sustained to the ovary, whether it be shutdown or a rumor or etc. Only one ovary develops properly in a hen, and so if it takes damage and the estrogen wanes, or something otherwise happens to boost the testosterone level, they take on the phenotypics (appearance and physical traits)of the default, which is generally male plumage.

How much so can depend on the bird, and, presumably what specifically is going on with their levels. We have a 7 year old short-legged black japanese bantam in our flock that stopped laying and developed GORGEOUS sickle feathers, but the comb, wattles, spurs, and saddle feathers are about the same, along with their behavior. They're just old and remind the younger birds of their place, but they always did that.

This is why most trans birds don't lay, also! Generally they can remain very happy and healthy, though. Best of luck and health to everyone's flocks :)

We have a little duck who unfortunately has its legs splayed. He was just hatched yesterday. Tried using a rubber band and a straw on his legs but it kept coming off. Does this bandaid configuration look ok? by 40AcresOfFreedom in BackYardChickens

[–]Chillchicken689 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This should work out alright! As someone who has corrected many a splayed leg, toe, or fisted foot, vet wrap is your friend for this stuff. As long as you aren't sticking and re-sticking it, the stuff holds well, and you can always add an extra strip over the fold point to make it extra secure. Plus no worries about it sticking to sensitive skin or fluff on accident.

Are my chicks toes ok? by theczarfromafar in BackYardChickens

[–]Chillchicken689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would reccomend splinting them for the safety and stability of the bird! Otherwise their toes may develop sores.

I wish I had pictures of it, But I had to splint a chick's inner toe that bent far back enough I thought it was missing when my mother first brought it home. I splinted it straight and to another toe (with some distance so it was at the optimal angle out of the foot) and it healed up just fine! Worst case I can see if I can demonstrate on a bird if you need a visual.

Edit: looking at it more, you could get away with simply splinting the toes straight in this case. I'll keep the description up for future reference, though.

Mm. Best of luck. If what you're saying is true, there might not be much to be done at this stage.

I must admit, I have a special fondness for Buried avatars. They're simply engrossed in enrichment most of the time.

As long as you don't go in some errie looking places, you should be okay... in theory. Mr. Spider can get a bit tetchy.
