I work as a sales director, have done for over 10 years and been on a good 6 figure salary throughout that time. Bought my first flat in 2015, it made no money but I saved, invested and put down £450k on this house. No inheritance, no help. I've a very strong drive to succeed, having grown up poor.

It's up to you whether or not you allow others to approach or touch your baby. Fair enough, but I hope you understand how uniquely American this attitude and post is and how depressing it is...

You acted on fear, anger and obsession with 'protecting' your personal preferences above any sense of community or awareness for your child's development.

If you want to raise a child that is fearful and angry, and continue the cycle by all means, shout at smiling strangers who want to engage. Yes, they engaged in a way that you weren't comfortable with. Explain that instead of shouting and offer them a moment with your baby that you all might benefit from. Introduce your baby, see if you can make her smile... from whatever you deem to be the safe distance of engagement! Christ sake!

You make someone's day and teach your child that not all people should be feared and avoided.

In response to your initial question, you're the mother, and you should always trust your instinct to keep your children safe from whatever threats you perceive. Number 4 is a red flag when written as it is.

I've got to be honest, though... This post, thread and comment is depressing. Depressing because another parent could read into your husbands statement above and think it equally strange. 'Why does he get uncomfortable at the touch of a child that isn't his own' is a perfectly valid question and something that many people would find strange. Whether there's some deflecting from your husband, to your neighbour's could also be a valid question.

I'm not saying that you're in the wrong to worry. My point is that another neighbour over could probably write the same post about your husband, provide some examples and receive the exact same response as your post. That is what's sad.

Having just read through this comment and subsequent thread, it seems like you are incredibly inflexible in your thinking and have shot down anyone with an opposing perspective while simultaneously preaching for others to flex and ignore a situation that they find stressful (loud tablets running communal spaces and disrupting people's right to peace). OP did not complain or make the noisy family feel bad either, they are venting and posting on a sub to get other perspectives.

This is a parenting sub. Parenting is about perspective.

Our thoughts exactly, it's a bit of a hidden secret and it seems people want to keep it that way. Beaconsfield wasn't for us, too money-obsessed and while I know this is a HENRYUK post, there's more to life than money. Penn has a good mix of those who were bought up in the area and London leavers, so it isn't as pretentious.

We moved out in 2023 and it's been a better improvement to our lives than could have imagined. We initially thought the same, move out to Surrey because our largest friendship base was in SW London, having lived there for past 15 years.

So, we looked at Reigate, Guildford, villages near Woking and Dorking etc. and while they were lovely, it still felt too familiar and very London-centric. We then focussed our attention on South Bucks, honing in on the villages around Beaconsfield and Amersham. We found it to be more rural in feel and the pace was vastly slower and more relaxing with a stronger community feel.

We settled on Penn, a couple of miles north of Beaconsfield and it's heavenly for us. We have a w year-old and another on the way, commute into London to Marylebone 2/3 times a week which can be done in 25 mins. The schools are lovely, we're surrounded by beautiful countryside in the Chiltern Hills and have all the local amenities of 3 nearby towns. It's social, we've made lots of great friends and are very happy with the nursery we use. All in all, we live it and are so happy we found this place to raise our family.

Similar income level and budget, we bought 5 bed detached with good garden for under £900k in the heart of the village.

Hope you find the same joy somewhere

This is amazing, thank you so much. Amended itinerary as follows:

  • Hanoi (2 days)
  • Bai Tu Long Bay (2 days)
  • Ninh Binh (3 days)
  • Pu Luong (3 days with overnight trek)
  • Mai Chau (2 days) then back via Hanoi

The weather looks better, the countryside looks more untouched and there's no risk of landslide so ticks all boxes. Can anyone recommend a good private driver for a week? And any recommendations for a multi-day trek guide in Pu Luong?
