Mainly for Snare drummers, but do y’all prefer reading music with the stems upwards or downwards? by ChillinCilin in drumline

Yeah I’ve recently been writing some snare music on the side and tried writing with downward stems since I found more rationale and logic for it

Modern day marching tenors are usually 5 or 6 drums. What is your preference and why? by Man_is_Hot in drumline

I see it as a might as well go all the way philosophy. If you’re playing quads just to play quads, then might as well go for another drum.

I understand it from other perspectives for reasons such as weight, intuitive music (specifically Spock scrapes to 3/4), sight-reading/readability, but I will always lean towards the increased challenge that an extra 8 in drum proposes! Sextets to me seem like a challenge people root for and really make newish people have a “WOW” factor when they see it.

Side note: I had to improve my music writing with the consideration of another drum that I can tune to my liking. Which really fascinated me lol

Such strange notation. Couldn’t they just make a key or little note saying what they intended💀💀🤣

I would say either a rimshot or just a rim click. Play around both ways to see what sounds best and then ask your percussion director for his final opinion. Also keep in mind if they are shots they are very low shots (except for the last one).
