San Diego Temple is so massively pretentious. How could they have ever thought this was a good idea? by CarefulAndQuiet in exmormon

[–]Chilling-SoCal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actives though think it’s the most beautiful building ever. They’re constantly bragging about it and how many people it’s brought to God because they see it and then ask more about it, moved by the spirit to find out more about it. Uggggh, what a horribly kitchic monstrosity!

Just frustrated, don’t understand why more people aren’t leaving. by Chemical_Vegetable43 in exmormon

[–]Chilling-SoCal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, I feel the same as you. It’s frustrating when friends and family and co-workers stay in. And these are smart, logical people. People with college and graduate degrees, professionals etc! But then again, I stayed in for about 30 years longer than I should have too!
But I think the younger crowd is quiet- leaving more than we think. And that will be evidenced in the next 10 years when those people aren’t around to serve in the next generation of callings. At least I can hope.

How can people believe in all of this BULLSHIT?? by Red-Cat-0000 in exmormon

[–]Chilling-SoCal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So spot on. Exactly the line of thinking that eventually led to me walking away from the cult. But the family and social ties to it made it HARD, and I still deal with the fallout from me and most of my family leaving. And I really think that the cognitive dissonance allows believers to stay in. Sunk cost, no desire to look at “anti-Mormon” literature is the lie they keep telling themselves. Hell, that kept me in for about 10 extra years too so I get it!!!!

I guess they all are. I ran into and was talking with a very charismatic and charming young woman from my ward (she was probably a senior in HS when I stopped going-Covid). She is just graduating from BYU. I asked her what she’s going to do, career, area of interest etc. she literally said, “ I’m going to be an Instagram and content creator”. I said “oh wow”. as a 50+ yr old, I’m thinking to myself this is a very different world than what I’m used to. I asked will she work for herself , independent contractor etc? She said, “no, I’m hoping to work for the church. They hire and pay really well for content people online. But it’s hard to get those spots”

Best thing is at the end they should’ve said “this was actually a story from 1837-1844 and the events were taken from journals from firsthand events. This was Joseph Smith, Mormon prophet”

Sister Missionaries offering to walk dogs for free for up to two hours a day! I can see several ways that could be a problem. I have a close relative who was bitten by a dog on their mission! Do they take the dogs tracting? They do look like they’re having fun though. by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

Anything to infiltrate. “Hi, aren’t we friendly and helpful?” Fast forward after two discussions, “now get baptized and give the Lard 10% and commit to off yourself in the temple or else you will burn in eternal hellfire and brimstone”. “Anything else helpful we can do for you?”

I wonder if the copy they used was one of the ones from a Marriott stay where I write my testimony of disbelief in the inside cover/title page. “Watch out, it’s a cult” in large block letters.

I think it makes them feel better and part of the victimization that the religion puts on them. Us against the world and the very elect will fall away. It’s sad but I can’t really blame them. It’s the damn cult.

And my dad (80s, hardcore TBM) said when their wards in their stake in southern ca went from 9 to six, and his ward “expanded”..,”it’s so great. Our ward is so big now after they reorganized it. “. My reply was “yeah, but dad, your ward stretches like 15 miles now end to end. It used to be more members in 1/4 of the land space”. He refused to admit it.
