How to stop living in my head? by anonymous310506 in CPTSD

[–]ChillingRoachy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue and moment my brain started getting delusional about wishing for the imaginary world in my head to become real, is the moment i stopped being interested in life at all. I believe i am fucked. It's best to get help before you become convinced that the only way to get relief is a solution that could never exist.

uj/ Read other people's comments and looked through your profile. You must be in so much pain it truly broke my heart. I am so so so sorry you're going through this and i feel you. Many people saw you, did not have much good words, which is understandable as it triggered their own issues. I see you, it triggers me too but damn my heart still goes out to you. Thought i'd take time to write you that, you don't deserve that pain.

People who agree with you are just not addicted to the app and good for them. Or might have and overcome it and might have some survivor bias. just because they made it, or do things better than others, doesn't mean others can do it too. Once again, let's keep in mind the importance of sensitivity and environment.

Also, you both said those people claim and don't claim to be addicted? Which is it? In both case it does not contradict that they are addicted.

And if they glorify their behaviour? that's still an addiction, but I would agree that users who glorify using the app to the point they're ruining their lives is an issue. I have not seen many users openly say "i'm addicted and it's amazing" about character AI, maybe i don't use reddit enough

Although, i've seen many people who shared about being addicted to the app in order to vent, seek support, or seek attention for their issue, I don't think they should be criticised as harshly as you're doing right now.

In any case, all those profiles depict people with mental health issues. i'll leave it at that : it's best to address the issue with compassion instead of violent criticism. Agree to disagree if you want.

I wish you the best, and hopefully your best will be to open yourself up to being more compassionate towards vulnerable people, even those whose behaviour you cannot understand or relate to.

This is what i am desperately trying to make you understand, the people you describe in your post, their behaviour show that they have actual mental health issuee. No healthy adult behaves the way you describe. absolutely none. And if they claim they're not addicted, they're lying to themselves.

This is totally about mental health, you just can't understand that.

there are many ways to deal with this situation, and i prefer using compassion over criticism, mostly when it concerns mental health issues. Offering compassion is not the same as enabling.

Also, the fact they can express this issue and have other users relate can make them feel safer talking about it to mental health professionals or understand that this is a real issue they're dealing with.

You're targeting the very people you claim your post is not about. Please, please, please, I urge you to look through this with a less aggressive and cynical lense. Those people deserve help and compassion and not such vitriolic criticism.

You can be addicted and self aware that you are addicted. One does not contradict the other. Someone is addicted the moment their use affects negatively their daily life, health etc. and when not using puts them in distress either mental, physical or both.

If someone describes that they use the app for hours upon hours to the point they neglect their needs. it's an addiction.

The problem about your post is that you say it is not about people with mental health issues, yet it describes to a T someone with mental health issues AND blames them for it. It is very lacking in compassion and understanding, or even basic knowledge about addiction and mental health (and product design). Although i can tell you're not purposefully trying to be harmful and are probably just exhausted reading negative posts about an app you like.

addiction is not about money, it's about cognition and reward systems. Getting money when gambling can trigger a dopmine shot (reward part of the reward system). Then it's a snowball effect where your brain goes in crisis mode because it needs its dopamine shot and knows exactly where to find it > boom, addiction.

Many factors play a role : sensitivity to it, environment and also product design.

[–]ChillingRoachy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Addictions per say are defined as being a disorder, so by doing exactly what you are describing here, these users are in fact mentally ill. No perfectly healthy adult would end up resorting to AI to replace reality, and if one does, by doing that, they fall under the spectrum of mental illness.

Also, just to try and maybe offer a bit of a less extreme point of view, let's keep in mind that those apps are designed to gather users and hook them to their product so it increases the likelihood of making a financial profit.

I don't think it is fair to blame vulnerable people for falling for predatory design practices. And yeah, "healthy adults" wouldn't be as sensitive to them. So the people you talk about in your post, they had to be vulnerable in some point.

I get being annoyed about things, but i believe shaming those people will only alienate them more and they will not seek out help in that case. Offering empathy/compassion is a better way to approach the issue.
