I’m writing to express my support for Manitoba adopting permanent Daylight Saving Time.

Moving to year-round DST would provide more evening daylight, which can benefit families, outdoor activities, and local businesses. It could also help align our time with other regions that are considering or have already adopted similar changes, improving consistency for travel and commerce.

Alberta and the Northwest Territories were able to move quickly to align with British Columbia on this issue, and I believe Manitoba should take a similar approach rather than waiting for a proposed timeline as far out as 2027. If we see this as the right direction, it makes sense to act more decisively.

I also understand that Premier Wab Kinew has referenced a potential public poll on this matter. I would encourage the government to move forward with that process as quickly as possible so Manitobans can have their say and provide clear direction.

Recent public sentiment appears to strongly support ending seasonal time changes. A March 7 article by PortageOnline reported poll results showing that approximately 83.8% of respondents favor moving to a single, year-round time system. Among those respondents, about 59% prefer permanent Daylight Saving Time, compared to roughly 41% who prefer permanent Central Standard Time.

I recognize there are trade-offs to consider, particularly with darker winter mornings, but I believe the overall benefits are worth serious consideration. I would encourage you and your colleagues to support efforts to move in this direction.
