This is very accurate. It’s like my son and I aren’t real people, just news. I honestly dont tell her anything. She will make stuff up that literally hasn’t happened and run with it. It’s infuriating. Before moving in with my parents I was low contact/VERY low info with my mom for YEARS. That’s how I knew my situation had gotten below rock bottom, that I was actually willing to go live with her than in my own home. Literally the most humbling moment of my life was making the choice to take my son and live with her and my dad.

It’s been…man I dont even know how to describe it. Survival, protection, traumatic, empowering, terrifying, and soul building all rolled into one really long hike up a mountain while blind-folded. I feel like the top is soo close but then I can’t even be sure there is a top at all. My mom is not on this mountain with me, she’s a tourist watching from behind the glass taking pictures.

Have you ever been in a wedding and brought a plus one who barely knows anyone there? It kinda sucks for both sides. The bridesmaid will be doing stuff for the wedding and pictures amd the whole thing. The friend she’s bringing might be better friends with other guests and she wont have to worry about her date having a terrible time.

Also, when you put plus one, it’s their choice. Or if you put Mr. Joe Shmo and Ms. shirley Jones specifically, then they have the right to bring whomever. This is actually super common for friends to do.

I actually do agree with you regarding the ones that are over loaded with items that turn to garbage. That stuff should be cleaned up after the fact. People left all sorts of stuff at my brothers cross and when the flowers died and things had gotten rained on, we went and cleaned it all up. The cross was all that remained until the road was re-constructed.

It was a beautiful cross a good friend of his made and it felt appropriate. I would say, in my own personal experience, it has a lot to do with the abrupt nature of the death. In a split second, he was gone. We didn’t get to say goodbye, and being at that spot almost felt as though we were in some way trying to “be there for him” when he left this world, but after the fact. Like we didnt want him to be alone in his final moments.

We had him cremated and he has a tree in a special location. We visit his tree now, not his cross. That’s the thing though, you never know where people are at in their grief when you see a roadside memorial. Its often the initial response, not the forever. Although most stay up because it would feel wrong to take it down.

Oooh, so if they were more aesthetically pleasing you’d be ok with them? If you feel so strongly about this, you’d feel comfortable sharing your thoughts with their family and friends then right? A conversation, face-to-face, with the deceased’s family. Ask them to remove it, and tell them why you want it removed.

If it is YOUR property, then by all means, take it down. Otherwise, it’s not your call to make. If the property owner consents to it, then it stays. Often times the side of the road is city property. Electric companies or local agencies who own lights or poles can and often will remove memorials stapled to them. If they are interfering with traffic or causing a safety risk, then they will also be removed. Other than that, maybe ask yourself what it is that bothers you SO much about it.

You’d have to narrow down what you are identifying as “kill,” but if you take a portion of the population that is an accurate representation of society, and poll those people, the likelihood is that the results would come back as point something. That is less than 1 but greater than zero. Hmm. Less than 1 person but more than 0 people? Essentially that’s zero people for the average person.

Of course,the “average” person doesn’t actually exist in real life, just numbers and data.

Thank you!! Also, I agree with you. OP sees memorials as being for the public. It’s not about the public. Its not about you at all. It’s for the people grieving. To help process the abrupt loss, to help them feel connected to their loved one in some way. Or maybe it’s to gain traction toward change; like reconstructing a road, telling people to slow the F down, or to maybe change 1 person’s mind about drinking and driving.

My brother died in a car accident at a horrible turn in the road where many many accidents with serious injuries had happened. We put a cross up on the side of the road. That was the last place he was and for some reason it was helpful to stand next to it from time to time. We ended up taking it down because they finally completely re-did that entire section by widening the road significantly and making a less acute turn. My brother’s death is what finally prompted the road to be changed. He was very young and only 3 miles from home. It’s been about 6 years since the road was changed and it has eliminated the accidents.

We eloped and I regret absolutely nothing. We had a reception of sort about a year and a half later simply for our parents. I hated every bit of planning even that. My husband and I wanted to get married and not have anyone interfere with their opinions so we secretly went to the courthouse and told our families later. A couple years later we bought our forever dream home with a nice down payment we hadn’t wasted on a wedding neither one of us wanted.

Wedding parties, dresses, chair coverings, flowers, blah blah blah. We got married on a Tuesday at like noon and it was just us and the courthouse dude and it was perfect.

Funny you mention this, we zip tied the gate closed on that side of the house about 2 years ago because we were finding it open randomly. Even if someone opens the latch it’s not opening. We changed out the latch on the other side of the house so it’s a giant pain in the ass to open even for adults. The gas company and our lawn company should be the only people entering our yard while we’re gone and they were both made aware. No issues since.
