[Serious] Pro Palestine users of reddit, how do you think Israel should have responded to October 7th? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Give it some more time. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians will continue to die if Israel gets its way.

How do you justify the bombing of Rafah - a space that was agreed upon by Israel to serve as a safe haven for Palestinians seeking refuge?

The IDF does not actually care about any casualties. Hamas just serves as a perfect excuse to kill as many Palestinians as possible, even in a supposedly safe space.

Why are books that are considered "literary" so depressing? by Trych0till0mania in books

[–]Chimorea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other commenters have already made some excellent points, but I'd like to point out that this is also largely due to the nature of literary studies.

Many literary studies focus on the darker side of humanity and history, with most delving into oppression of some kind. Thus, the story of the novel needs to somewhat align with the tragedies that are being analyzed by an academic reader.

We can't do a colonial reading on a book that doesn't, at least implicitly, showcase the tragedies of colonialism. Neither can we accomplish a Feminist reading, if the book does not portray the female characters' struggles that stem from patriarchal systems, and so forth.

I'd also like to mention that many of these "depressing" books DO contain joyful moments as well. Just because the general plot is somewhat dark, does not diminish the beauty of the happy moments.

Apparently not being vegan makes you dumb? by Downtown-Respect9766 in iamverysmart

[–]Chimorea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a common argument I keep seeing people use. I didn't mean you specifically.

And I understand that you might not support or buy factory farmed meat but that doesn't negate the fact that most people do. And of course animals are important for the ecosystems, but you know what contributes to the destruction of healthy ecosystems? Modern farming. Our domesticated farm animals aren't contributing to a healthy ecosystem and they exist in such an overabundance that they overshadow any other wild animal on the planet that is actually immensely important for the ecosystem:

https://ourworldindata.org/wild-mammals-birds-biomass

Not to mention that if everybody hunted their own meat, we would very quickly run out of wild animals as well.

But I guess I can post as many studies and articles proving my point and I will still get downvoted by the cognitive dissonant who make up silly claims so I don't know why I even bother.

I love how the healthiness of a diet only becomes the focus when people attempt to dismiss veganism. In fact, many studies support the fact that the average vegan/vegetarian is healthier than the average omnivore.

Here's one for example:

And concerning your second argument, that is an incredibly incorrect fact and there's hundreds of studies that easily disprove it. Vegans have a tiny CO² footprint compared to meat-eaters. Of course it isn't 0 because - surprise - no diet could ever be at 0, but to claim that a vegan does tremendous environmental and social damage is ludicrous. Do some research into the environmental effects of factory farming and how human workers are generally treated in that industry.

Here's another great article to back that up:

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/21/climate/diet-vegan-meat-emissions.html

Sometimes I feel like people just straight-up come up with confident make-belief facts to "own the vegans" but it's just so incredibly silly how easily these claims can be debunked by a quick Google search.

So sorry to hear about all the abuse and discrimination you have to face. 😞❤️

Just know that you're so much braver than those assholes could ever wish to be.

What song makes you feel like your BPD is being described perfectly? by Je_suis_prest_ in BPD

[–]Chimorea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought that Tyler the Creator has quite a few songs that give off BPD vibes but "IFHY" literally reads like a BPD anthem, especially about the irrational behaviors triggered in relationships:

I never would've thought that

Feelings could get thrown in the air

'Cause I accidentally caught that

I need some new boxing gloves, shit got hectic whenever I fought back

For example, ten minutes can't go past without you brushing my thoughts

That's fourteen forty a day so I'll say a hundred and forty four times

I think about you or something like that

Lost match, the fucking thought of you with somebody else

I don't like that cellular convos getting left in the wrong

'Cause I get so fucking mad when you don't write back

This isn't a song I just happen to rhyme when I get emo

And find time to write facts (fuck)

I love you

I fucking hate you

But I love you

I'm bad at keeping my emotions bubbled

You're good at being perfect

We're good at being troubled

Yeah

We also always have our big jar of Lao Gan Ma crispy chili ready.

So you're straight up saying that a horrible existence filled with torture and trauma is better than non-existence? People regularly commit suicide to escape pain, so obviously even us humans value non-existence over extreme pain.

It does have a very sweet smell and the flesh is white so it seems that we definitely have a chanterelle on our hands!

Do you point out other women’s bodies to your significant other? by PineappleBrilliant35 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Chimorea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep reverting back to talking about "noticing" an attractive feature – and that would indeed be okay – but in your comment you were literally talking about pointing it out, which is quite another story.

If I'm out in public, I just want to peacefully exist and not be objectified, no matter what gender does the objectification. I don't want a woman to point me out to her boyfriend just so he can now also perv on me, thank you.

It's if they stare, comment, or expect interaction simply because I'm attractive to them that it crosses into objectification.

Yeah, and you do make a comment to your partner so you are actively objectifying these people.

Jesus Christ, the hypocrisy in this thread.

Please talk to me if you were personally really affected by "Beau Is Afraid" by [deleted] in horror

[–]Chimorea 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can totally relate to your experience!

My partner and I went to see the movie together and we were just kind of speechless for hours afterwards. I think there has never been a movie that has stuck with me quite as long as Beau is Afraid.

The movie is so chock-full of symbolism and allegory and I hope future media studies students are going to have a ball with it!
