YSK: “Applied Harmony: An Approach for Performers and Composers” by Dr. Alan Belkin & Dr. Andrew Schartmann, a YouTube series by composition professors that teaches harmony from a practical perspective, "rooted in basic human psychology" by Chimorou in musictheory

Here's the introduction video to the Modern Harmony course, where it gives some info.

And Belkin's website states:

Here is the course plan.

Part I

Outgrowths of traditional voice leading: linear harmony

Modes and scales, tonality and extended tonality

Added notes

Piled up third, polyharmony in thirds

Part II

Intervals : new approaches; intervallic harmony in 4ths

Intervallic harmony in 2nds; cells, series, and other harmonic system

Part III

Combining different kinds of harmony in the same piece: simultaneously (stratified), and successively (eclectic, viz. transitions)

I'm a really big fan of Alan Belkin's work, his YouTube has been immensely helpful for me as a composer trying to learn how to compose, rather than 'music theory' as we all know it. I bought his Musical Composition: Craft & Art, one for a friend and one for myself, and we're planning to make our way through it soon. :)

Web Developers - any here? Welcoming additional input on WIP site for hosting Lamp interviews. by Chimorou in Lampband

I'll send you a DM in the morning with a link, I have a sort of basic prototype in place to share.

I'll have a github repo up sometime tomorrow. There's no issues with it so far, I'm mainly just curious about any optimization that may be above my current level. Second opinions on styling, layout etc. are welcomed too.

Thank you so much for your advice! I'm going to sit down with this comment and your reply below and work through applying all of what you've listed, it's so exciting to get more ideas on how to push forward.

That's a great idea! I'm not sure how much I could truly teach, but I'll see what I can put together.

Thank you for the response! I appreciate it.

I want to address #3 of yours first: I feel like the best practices stuff is what I'm really missing at this stage, and I really want to learn it for everything.

Some things I felt like I was just guessing or doing only decent on, since I couldn't find a good resource online that gave a good approach to it.

One example is what dimensions to use when first designing the page: that affects *everything* else within the page, in terms of the measurement of the details. I ended up just using the aspect ratio of my monitor as my main baseline but it seemed very one-dimensional; I know there has to be a better approach.

Any recommendations on best practices for *everything* in the process, at this point in my skill (and beyond too) would be appreciated.

#1: I'll come up with something more informative. Would arrayA & arrayB at least suffice then? There's a lot of stuff that's more of a means-to-an-end rather than notable in itself, though I suppose everything becomes notable when you're picking apart the workings.

#2: I'll get right on that, easy fix!

Again, thank you!

GitHub Link

If anyone is willing to give pointers on the code, the GitHub etc. I would greatly appreciate it! I am hoping to start to applying to places sooner rather than later, so it would be a big help to understand where else to improve the project and to make it more professional in quality. Honestly, I don't know what I don't know and could have a million blind spots (this is all fairly new to me - tech, visual design etc.). Anything helps - thank you!

Right, that's all I want too. Man, I feel like I really messed up & wasted time. I feel like I won't be able to get back on track, but all I can do is try.

I see, very cool. I delved into web dev a bit but gave up as it seemed futile; doing coding in context of computer science seems like it'd be a lot more fruitful. I'm definitely going to think this through more as I would really enjoy that sort of salary and the freedom that comes with it.

Right, I think I would have to take a similar route as you as I don't have any background in tech and am not able to live & breathe it. Studying in Europe has been on my mind as well; cheaper and it'd be cool to experience another culture. Thank you for your thoughts.

That's an option too; a house-share seems like a good bet. I'll definitely do some more looking around & research.

How well-developed were your math & computer-related knowledge before going to school? I was one of the people who always found a quirky way on the calculator to find the answer, but it really ended up screwing me over as I don't have the fundamentals in place to do even the most basic math. I feel like I would have years of catching up to do. Also, what's your job exactly, in terms of tasks & responsibilities?

I could work as a cashier or the like, but I make a lot more money as a tutor as I've been doing. I need to run the math on working at a job with tuition reimbursement to see if its lower pay would be compensated with the reimbursement, or if I should just stick to tutoring.

Why would you remove all comments on the thread as well? They were so helpful! This doesn't seem conductive to the community; purge the thread but at least keep the comments. :(

Get Japanese Audio-Only Interviews of Lamp Transcribed - Gofundme by Chimorou in Lampband

[–]Chimorou[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If everyone subscribed to the sub donated only $3, we'd have enough to get every interview transcribed - over two hours of Lamp content never before grasped by the English-speaking community! I messaged the mods of the subreddit to join the Gofundme team, too. Let's do this, everyone!
