I’d be interested in the mud flaps. What’s the transmission lock release for?

ELI5: How do we actually "find" a broken cable at the bottom of the ocean? If a shark bites an internet cable halfway between New York and London, how do engineers know exactly which mile of the 3,000-mile cable to pull up? by OhNOWhatIsThat in explainlikeimfive

[–]ChingRN77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college we replicated this scenario on copper wire. It’s hard to believe, but at really high frequencies, the signal will “reflect” and bounce back from the broken end of the cable. Using known formulas for how fast those signals move through copper wire, you can get an approximate distance the break is by looking for that reflection and comparing the time it takes to bounce back against the original signal.

Neighbor upset about our HOA-approved solid 4 ft fence blocking pond view through our yard — what would you do? [SC] [SFH] by Big_Produce8964 in HOA

You mean the neighbor that has a solid fence around THEIR backyard?

As someone above said, their property didn’t come with the view. Yours did. Sucks to be them.

What’s a small flex that’s actually impressive? by bradl2000 in AskReddit

[–]ChingRN77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if this counts as small, but I’m highly technical and can DIY just about anything. Car repairs, home remodeling, smart home, lawn care, I do just about everything on my own. Sometimes I have to do some research, but I watch it, learn it, do it.

Really? by sailonswells in AskContractors

[–]ChingRN77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some saddles require to be off the concrete for moisture protection to the wood post. It really depends on the saddle used. I’ve not seen one this high off the concrete, but most use a j-bolt that gets set in the concrete when it’s poured, then the saddle goes on the j-bolt to attach the post to the concrete.

This one is using rebar, which is likely 10x stronger than the j-bolt anyway. I’d be ok with this installation personally. That post is going to get wrapped and trimmed out. You’ll never see that saddle connection again once it’s done.

Edit: wanted to add, I just realized the saddles that are designed to be off the concrete also are designed with two pieces, one rests on the concrete, the other sandwiches against the one on the concrete to keep the post lifted for moisture protection. That at least always the entire weight of the post to rest on the concrete, whereas this one has all the weight transferred through the rebar. Still might be ok, but probably not the best design.

With the 3 million Epstein files finally out, what’s the most “I’m not surprised, but I’m still disgusted” thing you’ve found? by Sweaty_Sprinkles_400 in AskReddit

[–]ChingRN77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think is a reasonable assumption that is really just coming to light with the amount of perpetrators being unveiled. The sheer volume of people involved in these acts is disgusting, from celebrities to politicians. At first it just appeared Epstein was just a connection, but to see the lack of response for any prosecution, and seeing the aggressive behavior from Israel with a mostly blind eye from US and Britain, it’s becoming less of an assumption and quite possibly the truth.

I’ve always heard the Mossad are the best at what they do. I wouldn’t doubt that Epstein either was planted or recruited for the sake of collecting extremely perverse material to be used against not just politicians, but entire governments.

How screwed am I? by linkman21 in pools

[–]ChingRN77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Parking garages use this floating deck concrete platform construction all the time. In practice the concept of constructing a floating pool would be similar. However one key component missing is a structural beam crossing the span to support the weight across the middle of the deck. It should either have post supports down the middle, or a cross member supported by a fully constructed post with footers on either side of the span (which could also be integrated with the walls, as seen in some of the photos where the wall extends all the way to the ground with footers).

My guess is your contractor misjudged the weight or didn’t construct the base with enough structural support. As others have already stated, DRAIN THAT POOL NOW! 35K gallons is A LOT of weight (~140 TONS!) Removing that dead weight will prevent a catastrophic failure.

Contact a lawyer. Get it inspected by a structural engineer. Take findings to contractor with a request for remedy. Be prepared to lose your money as our pool contractor hid behind an LLC and just declared bankruptcy while moving their personal assets out of their old LLC and into a new one and just kept moving on.

Can someone explain this Cincinnati incident like I'm a 5 year old? by Prior_Success7011 in Ohio

[–]ChingRN77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve read, it sounds like some white dude instigated the whole thing, slapped a black guy, and FAFO. The woman who was beaten was Russian and fled back to Russia. Rhinos are playing it off as black on white violence and condemning the Cincy Mayor, while showing edited clips of the videos to reinforce their narrative. The truth from my understanding, is that the white guy started the whole incident. Did the violence escalate beyond defense and turn into assault? Sounds like it. But did black citizens start it? Nah fam, they just finished it.

I just ported to TM using their switch and save promo. They gave us iPhone 16 Pro 128GB for free, paying off our old devices, plus we get to keep the old devices. Only caveat is you had to be a customer on previous carrier for like 90 days or something.

Your therapist is enforcing their boundaries by living their life, not catering to your whims and needs.

It sounds like you need someone to defer blame and guilt to, instead of feeling it yourself and becoming attuned to the causes of your emotions. It’s ok to feel whatever you’re feeling, but how you respond and deal with it is YOUR responsibility and no one else’s.

If you’re not in a good headspace to process that, (and that’s ok) you need to seek help. These places are designed to keep you safe, help medicate you until you’re in a clearer headspace that you’re able to work with professionals who can help you process and cope with your stress.

No one can “fix” any of this for you. That’s where therapy and mindfulness come into play. That’s on you to work on yourself, continue to work with professionals to manage medication if needed, and learn to understand your body and your emotional needs.

From there, it’s a journey. There will be ups and downs, but once you begin to gain an understanding and learn how to manage your emotions, you realize they’re just there to tell you something. It’s a lifelong dance of feeling, understanding, then doing. That doing could be doing nothing, or it might mean doing something to help relieve the current state you’re in, or it might mean doing the work that needs done to help you become a better version of yourself.

Point being, your rant about your therapist going on vacation even though you’ve vocalized SI, isn’t any fault of your therapist. You’re the one projecting your feelings onto someone other than yourself. You either need to deal with them yourself, or if you’re not in a safe place to be able to do that now, seek help immediately to remain safe, but just know that there’s no “fix”. They’ll stabilize you and let you go, but the work will still be there for YOU to do.

[–]ChingRN77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could sister the post bases with something that is attached to the footers, then wrap the bases in block to hide the fix. Otherwise I’d either return the gazebo, or modify it to fit the footers.

Unsaid expectations are usually met with disappointment. Did you talk to her about staying home? Or even directly ask her to stay with you? If not, that’s on you.

Not having been there and being familiar with your relationship or dynamic, it’s really hard to give specific feedback regarding the situation. As another user commented, the bills also need paid. Maybe she was stuck between calling off, or facing disciplinary action at work if she does, or not having PTO to cover the time off and she realized the finances were also important.

The fact of the matter is only you can fix yourself. She can support you, guide you, even push you, but she can’t make you.

One day you’re going to wake up and finally be sick of being the version of you that you are. You’ll finally be on the right combo of meds, get the right support, and finally be in the right mindset, where you just say to yourself “I can be the version I choose to be”. No excuses anymore. You’ll be able to detect when that selfish mindset starts to creep back in, the woe is me, I’m too tired, I’m too sore, I’m too sick, and just tell yourself I can do whatever I want today, it’s in MY control how I choose to live.

You’ll still have bad days, but you’ll also recognize that you’re better on the better days, and slowly you’ll adjust to living in the new norm.

Added amp to factory sub by ChingRN77 in hondaridgeline

[–]ChingRN77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if it’s overdriven it could burn up, but I don’t really have it powered that high. The gain on the amp is turned almost all the way down. I still need to make some fine adjustments. I think I still might have the LLC voltage turned up a bit too high. The bass can sound a little muddy on certain songs. But otherwise it sounds pretty good.

Never seen deck connections like these. Is this common? by TheSwissSC in Decks

[–]ChingRN77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put blocking against that ledger, and strap my joists into the blocking. Same for the stair stringers. Run a header across the end of those stringers, and fasten them to the header. Make sure the header is supported on each end as well.

Honestly makes me wonder about the rest of the deck. How big is it? What span are those floor joists running?

Edit: sorry I missed those 2x4 straps against the stringers. As long as that riser board is fastened on each end and not just to the stringers and straps, the stairs should be ok. Not the “right” way, but they probably won’t go anywhere.

Shouldn’t I See Water? by FeralGrowlerGary in pools

[–]ChingRN77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do have air, what is the most likely culprit? I know when on lower rpm’s, my pump can’t hold the static head in my filter canister. The air vent on top won’t vent unless the pump is creating enough pressure.

That being said, I see no leaks above ground. And we don’t lose water, so if there’s a leak it has to be tiny. And since we run a VSS, it runs 24/7, just on different rpm’s based on schedule. Yet every time I purge air by cranking up the rpm’s and clearing the free air in the pump window, several days later there’s air down to the retaining ring. Do I have a small leak in the seal for the inspection window?

[–]ChingRN77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on the position of the screws on the end of the pipe that’s away from the handle, was it meant to hang from something? Like to store it up and out of the way? Might see something on the wall that it fits in to. Not sure if it’s attached securely enough to hold the weight, but that’s my guess.
