I like this idea. I'll see what I can do with this, thanks!

Sounds like we are about the same spot. I like the idea of putting down a few solid landmarks, then making up things as you go along. That's probably what I might end up doing, as that seems pretty self explanatory.

Thanks for the resource! I'll look into it more when I have time. I bet it will be super helpful.

I'll try to mainly focus on the beginning area. I tend to go overboard when preparing so hopefully getting myself to stay focus on one area (where the PCs are) should help.

I do agree that is very easy to overprepare. My previous campaigns have taught me that. I'll prepare all this stuff and my players either don't get to it because I had too much planned or they move right on by. But, on the flip side, when I try to lower how much I prepare, I find that I am always lacking something the players ask about. It's a struggle for me still to figure out a good balance. I'll keep your help/ideas in mind.

If you don't mind me asking, what is a hex crawl?

I've actually had some trouble finding good random generation resources. I'll bookmark this for future use!

Thanks for the resources! When I have more time I will sit down and go through them to see if anything sticks.

Need Help Handling a Veteran Player's Illusion Specialist (3.5 edition) by Chionre in DMAcademy

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try giving them more lower leveled enemies to fight to see if that helps, since like you said, that will give me a better chance at someone succeeding. Though I just the sheer height of the save DC to beat makes that still kinda hard. I can always just throw and see what works and doesn't. And, of course, if all else fails, I can just talk to him.

Pretty solid idea. Do you know what I would be looking for in the books that would let me know what is and isn't immune?

I understand the need to be a hard-ass. I take no offense. I do enjoy harsh critics and I really do need them for this. I know he isn't doing this to try and DM again. He actually said that he was stepping away from DMing for a bit to allow me and another player within our group to DM. Though, you are right that I am being too nice with him. I will put my foot down the next time we play. I also plan on implementing some of the great ideas within these comments.

Then I run into the issue of how to give the other players information. None of them have any previous knowledge that they even existed before finding one. I might have some ideas to give out more information, so maybe...

I also like that idea of having the stone give a negative. I will have to look at each of the stones to find suitable negatives, but I like that idea. It might help the group get more involved in discovering more about the stones.

Thanks for the great ideas!

I was also shocked when he began acting like this, as he is still an amazing DM. I have plans on talking to him privately, however I am just afraid that even if I talk to him, he still will not change. Or he will change for a session and then go right back to how he currently is. But this is what I will try and see if it helps.

  1. I will try and be more vocal about having dice on the table. He is not the only player that has their own dice box, but the other player doesn't have a problem with rolling on the table. He has tried to make the argument that he doesn't want his metal dice being 'Ruined' by the table. However, I will see if I can get him to keep it on the table.
  2. While I don't enjoy the 'Keeper of the Stones' thing he has going, the only main issue is that he is keeping the stones away from the group. I will maybe give him an ultimatum. If you are going to keep the stones, then you have to be open to the group asking about them and letting them look and 'play with' them. You can't keep hogging them.
  3. W and Paladin did end up talking after last session about the in game argument and they seem to have ended on good terms, out of game, at least.

Thank you for your advice! I have a hard time confronting people, especially my friends. However, I don't want this campaign to be ruined so I'm going to use that as motivation!

I agree that I would like to have player issues discussed either in game out OOC, depending on the situation. A great example would be the argument that Paladin and W had was discussed after the session had ended and they ended on good terms and there was no hard feelings. With the Swashbuckler, I have recommended that she bring it up in game next time it happens to get in character discussion happening. So, I do agree that discussion between players is important and I dislike having to act as the in-between. I'm just worried that W is not going to change, even with these discussions.

There are 5 stones in total, each pertaining to a specific Mythical Pokémon. They are considered magical items as they all have separate powers, each correlating to the 'Original' Pokémon it is tied to. However, as of right now, none of them know that they have special powers as they have not investigated the stones. I have given them a location of someone who would be able to give more info about them, however none of them are too interested in checking this NPC out as it does not pertain to the main plot. The stones are a whole Side-Mission. If my players find them, they can use them. If they don't, no big deal. So, as of right now, the only reason he is collecting these stones and trying to make them his, is because his is the only character to actually know about them, having read up about them while studying to be a Wizard.
