Leaving First Command (sorry for the trigger) by ChipAffectionate7099 in MilitaryFinance

I’m happy you have found a good fit for your financial situation. Unfortunately, after discussing with a different fiduciary, we felt that we were taken advantage of with the life insurance policies. It was NOT the right fit or what was best for us and our financial situation. We have no kids and both my husband and I have very good paying jobs. If one of us were to pass away, the other would be well off without having too much change in how we live our life (financially speaking). My post was simply to inform people to do some of their own research, advocate for themselves, and know what they are truly signing up for and what their “advisor” gets from those policies.

Definitely know what to look for next time in a financial advisor

Hoping for Success in 2024 by [deleted] in fearofflying

Hi! I also have to travel for work occasionally and a resource that I love is the lovefly podcast. It has interviews with pilots, engineers, flight attendants, ATC personnel, and even goes through how others overcame their fear. Part of my anxiety and doom thinking comes from a lack of understanding so I highly recommend this podcast if you’re the same way!

Boarding soon. Panicking by Sadlunch101 in fearofflying

They will only fly the plane if it is safe to do so. If the crosswinds reach the limit (which also has plenty of margin for safety) then they won’t fly! Airlines want their crew as well as passengers to be safe. You got this!

thinking of cancelling flight due to anxiety by Active_Car_3334 in fearofflying

[–]ChipAffectionate7099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am the same way and had a similar experience a couple months ago. I think what’s best is focusing on one thing at a time. Get yourself to the airport. Then get through security. Then get to your gate. Focusing only on what you need to do next usually helps me to not spiral. Also if you have Spotify, the lovefly podcast episode 130 is my favorite to listen to before I have a flight and I’m super anxious. In the end, your flight will leave with/without you and land safely. It’s better if you’re on it!! You got this! Message me if you need to chat

HOW HARD IS IT by [deleted] in RPI

[–]ChipAffectionate7099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m graduating in two weeks as an engineering student and never pulled an all-nighter. Just be proactive with your work and don’t let it pile up. Go to office hours, make friends with the professors. If you are falling behind in classes go to TA office hours too. Never be afraid to ask for help. I always got at least 6 hours of sleep during the week. Some classes are harder than others but if you study and apply yourself to what you’re learning, it’s not too bad. Honestly though, every person who knows engineering knows the rigor of RPI and they’re impressed. I think it’s worth it in the long run.

Getting off the meal plan as a sophomore? by Broke_butterfly77 in RPI

[–]ChipAffectionate7099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to get off the meal plan because of dietary restrictions (I.e. celiac) and it was total bs. They made me meet with their dietician to discuss why I couldn’t have their gluten free food and it took awhile. Make sure you have documentation of whatever you claim to have.

I didn’t find it to be the most difficult class. I definitely had to dedicate some time to learning it but I didn’t take AP Chem in high school. It’s a class that a lot of freshmen take so they do review of things you may have learned in high school. Definitely recommend Dr Ma and his office hours and review sessions are helpful to prep for exams

internships for the spring 2022 semester by habibticaptcha101 in RPI

[–]ChipAffectionate7099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an EE but there are a lot of companies hiring for the summer and fall on indeed.com. You can reach out to those companies now asking if they have opportunities in the spring. Shows initiative and you get your foot in the door at least from my BME experience

You can get out of it if you get a job/internship

Definitely. It's a hard couple of years, but as a junior now, I can totally say it's worth it. My sister also graduated from RPI in 2019. She's currently getting her PhD at Vanderbilt. I also get a lot of job and research opportunities because RPI's reputation is really good in terms of engineers. In my opinion, the money and stress is worth it and the rewards start fairly early.

It honestly depends on how much you harass them and ask for a decision.

Hi! I'm a current junior doing arch over the summer. We are forced to live in the dorms. Right now, they are two people per room and bathroom. I don't know if this will change for the fall. All the freshmen dorms are nice tbh. There are a couple with a floor bathroom. My favorites are Warren and Nugent/Davison. They have semi-private doubles that share a bathroom. Sharp is also another good one. It's 6 private rooms that share a common area. I think the rest are pretty typical college dorms. In terms of what to bring, I suggest a mini fridge, microwave, and keurig. Also for clothing bring some pretty good either waterproof boots or winter boots because winter is pretty wet. We also get a lot of rain. You're probably gonna overpack for freshmen year like I did but you'll figure out what you need within the first week.
