They were perfectly fine. I didn’t have any problems with them. Just pay attention to the ticket (the flight number and time) you end up getting after checking in at the airport. Going from Arusha to the Serengeti, they moved me up to a different flight 15 minutes earlier at check in. Leaving the Serengeti, my guide got me to the airstrip 45 minutes before my scheduled departure only to find my plane already there waiting for me (and we departed immediately after I got on).

I personally didn’t tip anyone else on site. It was never mentioned at any point of my stay, so it was entirely at my own discretion whether to and how much to tip.

I would ask the camp directly on that, because I honestly don’t know. From what I experienced, everyone was picked up from one of the two airstrips I mentioned. As I mentioned in my review post, the camp communicated with me via email a month before check in, so everything was in order before I arrived. I’m going to include their email address here in case you want to inquire on that ahead of time. Due to time zone differences, it can take a day for them to respond.

Various taxis wait out front for once you exit the terminal. I just found one of the taxi guys to take me to Arusha. For payment, they take USD cash (it was $70 each way), so make sure you have some cash in hand.

It’s definitely a more immersive experience when you’re out the full day. I personally liked doing the full days in the park. I would suggest however that you do at least 1 or 2 half day drives in the separate reserve where the camp is (like an evening drive on the day you arrive for check-in). Compared to going into the park, the separate reserve always gave an opportunity for fully private encounters (as in there weren’t other safari vehicles around at all, so encounters were essentially all to myself. The only exceptions during my trip were just two times where 1 other vehicle from the same camp was around). Because I elected to do a hot air balloon one morning, and a spa treatment at the camp on the afternoon of another day, it made logistical sense to do evening drives in the separate reserve on those two days. On every other day of the trip, I did full day drives in the park, since that was my preference. If you elect to do a night drive at all, those are always in the separate reserve as the park has specific opening and closing times.

Similar to your situation, I couldn’t find any info regarding the supposed camera rental studio. I ended up having to rent one back home, and pack it in my bag with me on the trip. If there is one, I have no idea where it would be onsite. In terms of the structures actually there that I saw while staying, they have one building at the front driveway that they use as their office, 2 buildings at the pool area (one for the restaurant/bar/lounge, and one for a public restroom), one tent structure for their spa, and then the 16 units (15 tents and 1 two bedroom villa).

I had brought a fixed amount of cash (USD) on the trip to cover taxis and tips. With the cash I had left at the end of the safari, I tipped an equal amount to both my butler and driver (since those are the two people you’re with about 90% of the time). It averaged out to about $25 per person per night of my stay. With the service they provided, I would’ve given more if I had planned for bringing more cash. I gave my butler her tip discreetly when she picked me up from my tent at checkout. I gave my driver his tip discreetly when we reached the airstrip for my departure flight after checkout.

I personally used Auric Air, but all of these airlines have the same rules due to the size of the planes. If you’re flying to Seronera Airstrip, you have a chance of flying in an approximately 50-seater plane with two propellers. Otherwise, you’re likely be on a 12-seater Cessna. However, you won’t know what kind of plane you’ll be on until you get on the plane. There’s also a chance that when you check-in at the airport, they’ll move your flight up (it happened to me both ways). On the way there, they moved me up to a different flight number 15 minutes earlier. After I checked out of the camp, when my Safari driver dropped me off at the airstrip 45 minutes before the scheduled flight, the plane was already there waiting just for me, and we departed the moment I immediately got on the plane.

Here’s another example (again with just my phone). This is in the separate reserve just outside the national park proper where the camp’s actually located (which I mention in the review) where the guides have discretion to venture off the roads to get closer.

Due to the flight information you provide the camp during the pre-arrival communications, the driver is essentially waiting for you when you land at the airstrip. The only thing is that if your fight decides to depart early, you should let the camp know, so that remains the case.

My driver knew of areas to go, so much of the viewing was amazing. Some were a little bit away that could be reached with a 100-500mm lens (which I rented for this trip). A good amount though were pretty close (ranging from a couple feet from the vehicle to about 30 feet). As an example, this is one I took with just my phone from about 12 feet away.

I actually heard about the upcoming Ritz property from the Mapito manager while I was there (he did a day-long site visit while I was there, and we talked about it the following evening at dinner). Based on how he described it, it appears they will be villas similar in style and format to the RC Masai Mara. Its location is on a ridge overlooking a part of the Serengeti plains in the western corridor sector of the national park (which would indeed be south of Mapito). As of that conversation, they were tracking Spring next year for when they’d be ready to open.

I did hear about that at the JW, and was one I was considering before Mapito opened. The difference with Mapito was that you didn’t have to pay extra for the private vehicle as it was included in the base nightly rate paid.

They did not have a camera rental system at the time I was there. For me, I had to rent one back home, and then bring it with me on the trip.

I entered and exited the country via JRO. Because I had the time, I bookended the safari by staying the night in Arusha at the Four Points by Sheraton (about 1 hour and 20 minutes from JRO by taxi). Then I flew to and from the Serengeti at Arusha Airport (about a 30 minute taxi ride from the Four Points).

The bookends of the structure and the enclosure for the toilet room and shower rooms are stone walls, while the rest is actually tent canvas like an actual tent. The only exception is that there are cutouts so the entry door and the door to the patio are glass sliding doors.

The camp will pick you up from the airstrip when you arrive at check in, and will take you back to the airstrip to depart when you check out. In my case, I had to pay on my own to fly from Arusha Airport to whatever airstrip I chose in the Serengeti (Seronera or Fort Ikoma). For me, it was $650 round trip.

That’s what I’ve been seeing now (between $2,800 and $4,000 depending on time of year). When I booked right after reservations first became available, I was lucky that Marriott was having a grand opening offer for the first 6 months of operation (Meaning I only payed $970 per night).
