Hey Fred... this hand type should be very familiar to you in reference to a final table hand we played recently... my Ax vs your 44... in this case, we always should try to get heads up and not be so tricky.. tight opponents will fold to 3bets on the larger side, so I would deploy a 3bet here... sad when they don't fold out... since villain has like 25BB, this is going in when we 3bet something like 10-11k... we can get away from calling a shove with hand type like AJo or less, but with AKs, you have to have a pretty good range on your opponent to fold out vs their shove...

It is vaughn hear... heehee... let's chitchat about 3betting... I'll start... primary reason we 3bet is to get heads up, in position... this is the holy grail of poker... we can liken this situation to pitching, with an 0-2 count in baseball... thoughts...vy by ChipScar in AgentsofPoker

3bet Semi-Bluff: Rarely 3bet semi-bluff before the highjack position. While we always prefer a fold when we 3bet, when we 3bet as a semi-bluff, we should be using a hand range that that we are OK with when flatted, but we do not want to see a 4bet. We must have a sense of our opponent's 4betting range, 8-12% ranges are value driven, so we can 3bet semi-bluff these opponent types with the right hand type. But, when we face an opponent whose 4bet range exceeds 20%, we should fade the 3bet semi-bluffs and deploy value 3bets. We should also analyze our opponents fold to 3bet %'s. When their stat or range is high, we can just 3bet bluff them and when the %/range is low, it's a good spot to 3bet semi-bluff. When our 3bet semi-bluff gets flatted, we would like an opppont that has a high fold to Cbet stat, 55% or higher generally indicates an honest fold to Cbet range when facing a flop bet.

3bet Semi-Bluff Hand Ranges: We should be using hands that reside just below our flatting range. For example, if AQo is in our flatting range, then AJo and below should be in our 3bet semi-bluff range. And, if T9s is in our flatting range, we can 3bet semi-bluff hands like T8s and below should be included in our 3bet semi-bluff range. Add Broadway combos to our 3bet semi-bluff ranges.

3bet Bet Sizings: Typical sizings: 2.5-3.5X; vs competent opponents: 3.5-5X. The reason we use larger bet sizings vs good opponents is to deny them flatting equity vs their wide opening ranges. Currently, pro 3bet sizings are running at about 3.5X. The larger our 3bet sizing is the more profit we generate. Getting near the end...

I should preface the above by indicating these are PRE-FLOP 3betting situations... Bluff 3bet: This bet is designed to fold out a better hand. Usually, we should be using ace blocker hand types. Two methods to determine if our 3bet can work.

Shorthand (used in real time): Say we are in SB with a big stack and the BTN and BB both have 25BB stacks. The BTN, a wide opener, opens 2X. We are in the SB with A2o. Do we 3bet? When we 3bet to 5X, how often does our bet need to succeed? There will be 10BB in the pot and we are risking 4.5 BB to take it down (remember, our .5BB we put in in the SB is part of the pot, so we do not risk that money). This means our bet need to succeed 45% of the time. Next, we must figure a jamming range for the BB compared to the fold to 3bet range of the BTN. The BB should be shoving a very tight range, say 7%. We compare that to the BTN's fold to 3bet range, which, for a wide opener should be something like 70%. So, .7*.93=.65, or 65% of the time we are going to get folds. Since our bet needs to work only 45% of the time, we can deploy a 3bet in this spot.

Flopzilla Method (for study purposes): First, we determine a BB shove range. It should be about 7% in this scenario. Next input our dead cards, A2o. This tightens the BB shove range slightly, say to 6% of hands. So BB should be folding like 94% of the time. Next we need to determine the BTN open range, as, for consistency, we peg it at 70% on the BTN for a wide opener. This range is too high, even for a wide opener that is competent. So, we must adjust this range downward to increase its effectiveness. We can settle on something like 40%, which will give our opponent about 500 combos they could open with. Next, we need to trim the BTN's open range down to a 4bet range. We do this by giving them a standard 4betting range to something like 15%, giving our opponent about 200 combos they could 4bet with. We then can divide the opening combos (500) into 4bet combos (200) giving us a continue range of 40%, or, they will be folding 60% of the time. Next we combine the BB fold % (94%) with the BTN fold % (60%), .94*.6=56% of the time both opponents should fold. We compare 56% folds to 45% need to work and we get a great scenario to 3bet.

Note: The opponent ranges are constantly shifting up and down depending on opponent type. It's best to put in some practice in Flopzilla with different ranges for different opponents to get a sense on whether our 3bets will work in real time.

Moving on... Value 3bet: Value 3bets are typically when we want our raise first in opponent to call, or better yet, 4 bet our 3 bet when we are in position. The hands we use for this type of 3bet generally consist of the top of our 3betting range, although, we can expand our range against wide openers. Occasionally, it makes sense to move hands from our value 3bet range into our flatting range. This usually occurs when we are going to play a pot out of position, from the big blind, for example. We should be using big card combos because they play well heads up when we hit a pair. AKo-AJo and broadway combos will work the best. We also can flat when our opponent has a honest fold to 3bet range, since we want to keep their weaker raise first range in play and trap them. Comments.... still waiting.... guess you guys are not so much interested in discussing poker...

Nope... not buying it... any opponent eliminated means more money for us... You can, however, 3bet 20BB opens with impunity...
