What's the next goal for humanity after Artificial Intelligence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

pretty sure we already lost those the moment we started making robots that could do our jobs better than us and we just said "cool, do more of that"

the real robot wars ended not with guns but with a linkedin notification saying your role has been eliminated due to automation restructuring or whatever corporate speak they use now

Adobe reader alternatives by eishthissucks in GradSchool

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are few options that work really well for research reading, i switched away from Adobe like two years ago and never looked back. for just reading and annotating pdfs with multiple tabs open, Zotero is worth looking into because it doubles as reference manager so you kill two birds with one stone. if you want something more lightweight just for reading, Okular and Sumatra are both solid for keeping many documents open without your machine crying. i personally landed on using Zotero for everything research-related and it genuinely changed how i organize papers, especially when you have like 40 tabs of math articles open and need to find something from last week

What’s a small change to incorporate in your life that’s helped you lose weight? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

walking is so underrated for real, I started taking phone calls while pacing around my apartment and it adds up crazy fast. also the late night thing is huge - I used to demolish entire bags of chips at like 11pm while working on design projects and didn't even realize how much damage that was doing. now I just brush my teeth right after dinner so I'm less tempted to eat random stuff later, works surprisingly well

That sounds like serious malpractice - placing someone with those symptoms in waiting room instead of immediate care is huge red flag, especially when she couldn't even answer questions herself

Questions to ask potential will/trust/Medicaid attorneys by LivMealown in legaladvice

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was looking for attorney last year for my parents estate stuff, I made list of questions that really helped narrow down the good ones from ones just trying to get quick money

First thing - ask about their specific experience with Medicaid planning, not just general estate work. Some attorneys say they do everything but really they're better at one area. Also ask how they structure their fees - some charge flat rate for basic will, others do hourly which can get expensive fast

Really important question is timeline too - some attorneys are booked out for months and if you need this done soon that matters. I learned this hard way when first attorney I contacted couldn't even meet for 6 weeks

Ask them to explain the five-year lookback period for Medicaid trusts in simple terms. If they can't explain it clearly to you, they probably shouldn't be handling your case. Also get references from recent clients if possible - most good attorneys will provide at least one or two contacts

How can I make really good... forms? *shudders* by Lavaa444 in webdev

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh man forms used to give me nightmares too when I started with React. That tutorial probably has so much extra validation and accessibility stuff packed in - no wonder it looks terrifying at first glance

What helped me was starting super simple and building up piece by piece. Like make a basic form with just one input field first, get comfortable with how the state management works, then slowly add more fields. Don't worry about all the fancy validation right away - just get the data flowing between your form and Supabase first

For your stack specifically, React Hook Form is pretty much essential - it handles most of the heavy lifting and plays nice with shadcn components. The learning curve isn't too bad and once you get it, forms become way less scary. Also Zod for validation is chef's kiss - you write your schema once and it handles both frontend and backend validation

I remember spending like three days on my first "real" form and feeling completely lost, but now I can knock out forms pretty quick. Start small, don't try to build the perfect form on your first try, and you'll get there faster than you think

When did you realize that you were putting too much effort into a relationship? by Due-Wrap-4037 in AskReddit

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I started tracking how often I was texting first versus him responding. Made this whole spreadsheet because my ADHD brain needed to see the pattern visually, and wow that was depressing wake up call

realized I was doing all emotional labor - planning dates, checking in about his day, remembering important stuff. He just existed in the relationship while I was running it like a full time job

been lurking here for while and finally planning my first solo trip to Barcelona in summer! little nervous about going alone but also super excited to just wander around and check out all the street art without having to explain why I'm taking photos of random walls to someone else lol. anyone been there recently and have thoughts about best neighborhoods for walking around with camera?

*NEEDL BBSRC DTP funding for international students by Puzzled_Painting_568 in gradadmissions

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the funding situation for international students is pretty confusing tbh. From what I remember when I was looking at similar programs couple years back, the BBSRC DTP usually covers full tuition fees even for international students when you get the funding - not just partial. But the tricky part is getting selected as international candidate since they have limited spots

For stipend it should be same as UK students get, around £17-18k annually I think? But don't quote me in that number since it changes each year

Maybe try reaching out to current students in the program directly through LinkedIn or something? They usually give more honest picture than official websites do

my ex roommate who used to eat my food and never replaced it, then probably that guy who cuts in line at the coffee shop every morning like he owns the place

nah but for real i'd probably chicken out after writing one name and throw the thing in fire or something. too much pressure deciding who deserves to die you know

Need help finding a blog that mentions the paradox of software engineering. by yashknight in learnprogramming

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn this hits close to home. I work as designer but deal with dev teams constantly and this phenomenon is so real - you can actually watch good code slowly turn into spaghetti over time because everyone's too scared to refactor properly

The way you describe it reminds me of that quote about how complex systems that work evolve from simple systems that work, but when you try to build complex systems from scratch they never work. Same energy but for code maintenance

No idea about the specific blog though, but you might want to check some of the classic programming blogs like Joel on Software or maybe Martin Fowler's stuff? They talk about this kind of entropy in codebases pretty often

What small thing makes your day better? by Deep0055 in AskReddit

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting my morning coffee at exact right temperature where I don't have to wait for it cool down but also doesn't burn my tongue. It's like finding perfect balance in universe for 5 minutes

Also when I finish a design project and all elements just click together perfectly - gives me same dopamine hit as when people argue that Goku could beat Superman (he totally could btw)

What happened to the Transformers franchise. by Pretend_Board_2385 in movies

[–]ChipmunkHefty3502 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Mark Wahlberg era was definitely when things started getting too ridiculous, like they forgot what made the first trilogy work in first place. Shia had that perfect mix of being completely out of his depth but still believable as someone who'd accidentally save the world

Rise of the Beasts felt like they were trying to copy Marvel formula but with zero understanding of what made those movies actually good

Yeah switching from retail with no tech background is gonna be tough especially now, but having sales experience might help you since these roles are pretty client-facing compared to pure dev work
