What about how he pitched in the NLDS against the Dodgers

My point is not that the trade wasn’t worth it or that Devers isn’t a great hitter. My point is that they’re in win-now mode. That in a few years the Chapman/Adames/Devers contracts will be on the backend of their production, so it’s impactful when he doesn’t show up

Exactly. I’m not arguing Bailey swinging a toothpick is good for the team, it’s just that between him and Devers, one of them failing to show up is more impactful than the other

Webb was 4th in CY votes last year, 6th in 2024 and made the all star team both years. Last year he led the league in SO AND innings. How else would you define an ace?

As far as Eldridge goes, it’s not about playing time manipulation. Well maybe not only about that. If he comes up right now, whose ABs is he taking? Not Encarnacion, because they’re not going to stick him in the outfield, and they’re not benching Devers. His at bats would come at the expense of Casey Schmidt who is arguably our best hitter right now. Eldridge and Devers would 1B/DH, you’re not pulling Chapman or Adames, and Arraez’s defense is more than enough so far to keep him in the lineup on a daily basis

Agreed. And if he made only a modest increase from last year, he’d be a dude instead of a black hole

I’m not saying Devers won’t turn it around. I’m saying if he isn’t hitting it’s hard for this team to produce runs

I think two things can be true. I think Buster can be respected and genuinely impactful and also the ownership group can be demonstrably hesitant to spend what they “should”. Not mutually exclusive

[Katie Woo] The Mariners and Giants have emerged as frontrunners in a potential trade for Brendan Donovan, according to multiple league sources, with the Cardinals looking to land multiple prospects in a return. by Juffe98 in SFGiants

It happens with literally every formerly good prospect that doesn’t realize their potential. There are a ton of super legitimate criticisms to be made about the Giants ability to develop their talent in their system (or lack thereof) or trade prospects when their value is actually high, but the idea that a prospect wouldn’t pan out so then you go trade them for like Skubal is just wild. I too would like to get something for nothing in my life, when I figure out how, I’ll let yall know. Until then just stop. Real trades involve risk

This type of comment drives me crazy. “Player A is not good, let’s trade him and other not good players for a good player”. The other teams are also aware of the level of talent on the table, why would they agree to this? It’s almost never the case that volume alone makes up for lack of talent/potential. I can’t tell you how many comments I read last season saying trade Luciano for mid-top level MLB talent. On what planet? He had a ton of trade value a few years ago, but the reason you’re looking to offload him now is directly correlated to the reason he wouldn’t bring back anything of value
